HONOR HARRINGTON

Having made him look a fool, she's been exiled to Basilisk Station in disgrace and set up for ruin by a superior who hates her.

Her demoralized crew blames her for their ship's humiliating posting to an out-of-the-way picket station.

The aborigines of the system's only habitable planet are smoking homicide-inducing hallucinogens.

Parliament isn't sure it wants to keep the place; the major local industry is smuggling; the merchant cartels want her head; the star-conquering, so-called "Republic" of Haven is Up To Something; and Honor Harrington has a single, over-age light cruiser with an armament that doesn't work to police the entire star system.

But the people out to get her have made one mistake. They've made her mad.

The first and still the best of the Honor Harrington series starts off with a mighty bang. While there have been some stumbles along the way, On Basilisk Station is a strong introduction to a powerful new heroine.

Honor Harrington is more than competent as she takes on her first captain role. And though she is stuck in an out of the way posting, her professionalism against what can only be called petty vindictiveness makes her shine brightly and introduces her to both her own nation, but that of the neighboring Peoples Republic of Haven as a force to be reckoned with.

David Weber's strong portrayal of Honor, along with her treecat Nimitz, and an ever-increasing cast of characters makes this universe shine and able to be explored in myriad ways. His attention to detail in the military aspect of his writing can be downright intimidating and plodding at times, but the action itself is fast-paced. And you care about these characters, their world, and the good they try to accomplish in it against the odds.

I can never recommend these books too highly, or too often. That the first one is available free here is just the icing on the cake.

Way to go, David Weber and Baen!
