HONOR HARRINGTON

Having made him look a fool, she's been exiled to Basilisk Station in disgrace and set up for ruin by a superior who hates her.

Her demoralized crew blames her for their ship's humiliating posting to an out-of-the-way picket station.

The aborigines of the system's only habitable planet are smoking homicide-inducing hallucinogens.

Parliament isn't sure it wants to keep the place; the major local industry is smuggling; the merchant cartels want her head; the star-conquering, so-called "Republic" of Haven is Up To Something; and Honor Harrington has a single, over-age light cruiser with an armament that doesn't work to police the entire star system.

But the people out to get her have made one mistake. They've made her mad.

I don't know about the print version, but the version I downloaded from this web site is awful. It reads like a quickly cobbled together first draft.

It's mostly exposition and poorly integrated backstories for minor characters. There are several chapters that add nothing to the story. There is even a chapter where the author forgets what room the character is in.

This book was my introduction to Honor Harrington and her universe. My god! what a revelation it was! Enemies all around, including at home, and yet she overcomes them all. Lucky for her they do not come at her all at once. But the lady is not without friends, either. I even recommended this series of books to a complete stranger met in the SF section of a bookstore. She said she would look into it. As Dan (comment of 2012-11-08) said below, you will get hooked. David Weber knows how to tell a really good story in a way which will keep you coming back for more. PParagraph Thank you, David, for all the hours I spent reading about your heroine and the people of her universe, the enlightened as well as the benighted.

Never read military sifi in my life before this book and I didn't read this one until I married a sifi geek. I have read all of the Honor Harrington books and can't wait for the next one to come out. Great story with wonderful and complete characters. With each book the story gets more exciting, intriging and the characters grow in depth and believability. Would recommend this book and the books that follow it to anyone looking for a great story, strong characters, military action, a bit of political intrige and even a touch of romance. A great series of books you can recommend to any who loves to read, young or old.

Beware! If you read this you will get hooked and have to read the rest of the series and that's quite a task.

An absolutely superior piece of fiction. As a naval officer, I am sometimes irritated by the little details that are left out of stories. This one doesn't disappoint, though. It kept me engaged from beginning to end.

I really enjoyed reading about Honor and her trials and successes as a young yet very capable Captain. Looking forward to reading more about her.
