The Star Kingdom of Manticore and the Republic of Haven have been enemies for Honor Harrington's entire life, and she has paid a price for the victories she's achieved in that conflict. And now the unstoppable juggernaut of the mighty Solarian League is on a collision course with Manticore. The millions who have already died may have been only a foretaste of the billions of casualties just over the horizon, and Honor sees it coming.

She's prepared to do anything, risk anything, to stop it, and she has a plan that may finally bring an end to the Havenite Wars and give even the Solarian League pause. But there are things not even Honor knows about. There are forces in play, hidden enemies in motion, all converging on the Star Kingdom of Manticore to crush the very life out of it, and Honor's worst nightmares fall short of the oncoming reality.

But Manticore's enemies may not have thought of everything after all. Because if everything Honor Harrington loves is going down to destruction, it won't be going alone.

Meh, ends the same way as the last three books only now with recycled cardboard villans as the end all evil guy so everyone can kiss kiss and make up with a minimum of creative ability. O well want to see how peeps and sea cows finally work together. p.s. should have gone with: The ailens did it!, would have made more since and have been cooler.

Great book. I am mystified as to how anyone can think that this ended in a cliff hanger. They obviously haven't read Storm From The Shadows. Now that, was a cliff hanger to make a saint curse like a sailor. This was just the closing of an Era with the stage neatly set for a new one. I, for one, thought it ended very nicely. I can't wait to see how Webber tackles the problem of making two multisystem star nations go after one planet and make it seem hard. Probably lots of intrigue there with someone trying to get through to the Solies and keep the situation from escalating there and Mesa revealing all its allied systems and pulling other things like the streak drive out of its hat. Can't wait!

The writing was solid Weber, nothing fancy, but readable and enjoyable. I do wonder about excessive verbage though. Storm anmd Mission could have been put into one book - minus a lot of the fluff - and been a much better read. I enjoyed the book, as i did Storm, but so much of it simply doesn't really add to the story. As a result important things seem to get little coverage (i.e. the aftermath of the attacks on Grayson and Manticore), the negotiations in Manticore between Elizabeth and the peeps; where as unimportant things (especially the meglomanic musings/plotting of Mesa) get lots. I felt unsatisfied at the end of Mission, not unhappy, but feeling that I just didn't enough coverage of important things.

After "At All Costs" Misson of Honor was... exceptionaly disappointing. It's like teh author realized how Eddings-like his charaters were getting and hit the reset button. If this was supposed to be what all the nonsense about Manpower was building to I found it more then a little anticlimatic. And the resoltuion concerning the PRH... oh please dues ex machina!

As with quite a few commenters here, there has been a time or two when I have struggled to wade through some of the internal dialogue, especially from the viewpoint of the bad guys.

Having said that however, I would like to stress that it is Weber's writing style and it is an impressive method that he uses to build characters. One things for sure...very few of Weber's characters are one dimensional.

In regards to the action...it was Awesome! And finally, the last chapter was every thing I hoped it would be. Indeed it was an incredible payoff that Weber has obviously been writing towards for at least the last three books.

I know plenty of people think this is a cliff hanger but I don't. Think about it, the real purpose of this story was the peace mission to Haven and the end of the Havenite wars. The last chapter provided this in spades. The dialogue was well paced, the scene was incredible and ironic, the characters involved are well developed individuals that we have read about through almost all the books and the end result is incredible in view of the overall story.

The battle witht he Solarian Fleet? Not what this book was about....of course it belongs in the next book.

Overall, this book was Excellent and I suggest that readers who need a little more than a basic shoot-em up to buy this book immediately.

    Great job David Weber.
