Centurions were the guardians of Rome. At the height of the Roman Republic there were over five thousand qualified Roman Centurions in the Legions. To be a Centurion required that, in a mostly illiterate society, one be able to read and write clearly, to be able to convey and create orders, to be capable of not only performing every skill of a Roman soldier but teach every skill of a Roman soldier.

Becoming a Centurion required intense physical ability, courage beyond the norm, years of sacrifice and a total devotion to the philosophy which was Rome. When Rome fell to barbarian invaders, there were less than five hundred qualified Centurions. Not because Rome had fewer people but because it had fewer willing to make the sacrifices. And the last Centurions left their shields in the heather and took a barbarian bride . . .

We are . . . The Last Centurions.

And this Rome SHALL NOT FALL!

I read the sample chapters and ended up deciding to pay the $15 and not wait till August for the rest of it.

Its a pretty good read, but way too preachy. The preaching gets in the way of a good story. A little subtle preachy is a good thing, lots of unsubtle preachy gets annoying after a while.

The tone was fairly ranty (acknowledged in the book), funny as all get out in spots and scary at the same time. Sort of reminded me of a movie I saw "handmaiden's tale", I think(?) a book by Margaret Atwood.

A bit much anti-lefting even if it fit for the character to feel that way. Also about the fourth book I've seen with a Hilary Clinton characature. Can we have a new bad guy? Very believable military worldview, felt right at home with these guys, even if they were Army, poor guys. How about some more Marines?

I think I have bought every one of John's books. I loved almost everyone of them, except this one!

I'm on chapter eight of what looks like a 300 page rant!

Come on JOHN! Let's get back to the Kildare!

    Ouch.
To paraphrase Theodore Sturgeon, Mr Ringo has "sold his birthright for a pot of message". Stultifying first person narrative alternating between mind-numbing treatises on agriculture and oxycontin-swilling right wing talk radio diatribes on the evils of the left, rife with perjoratives and ad homenium attacks. One can only hope Mr Ringo will get lightly bonked on the head with something and jarred back into writing top-notch military sf. I have loved every other book he has written or co-authored, but this one is a real stinkpile.

I like some of Ringo's stuff, but even at his best he tends to sound like an free-fiction writer straight out of Storiesonline.com - and his extremely obvious preaching of right-wing and america being the only country worth anything tends to get old when reading more books from him in a row. Not to mention that as a logical human being, I tend to find it hard to believe - especially considering the state of US at the moment.

That said, I do like his stuff, especially when he collaborates with someone who can restrain his rants and raves, for example Dave Weber. But, compared to his other books, solo or not, this sucks. I was dreadfully bored by the seventh chapter and it didn't improve from that forwards. The story read as a thinly veiled political rant. As I am not american I can't really say the political stance of american author matters to me at all, but this was extreme enough that it was difficult to maintain any kind of suspension of disbelief... Like red states responding under distress at 50% efficiency and blue states at 7%... that's 43% difference, apparently attributed to purely the reigning political climate of the state... Right... sure.

John hits one out of the park with "Centurion." I have known "Bandit" in parts of several officers with whom I had the good luck to serve. There are going to be those who can't stand the POV, but it is just those folks who need to hear what is being said. If he is wrong, refute him - with logic, not hyperbole. If he is right, hadn't you better re-think?
And all the while, a great read and a fun one. Thanks again, John. Always good times.

I just finished the sample chapters, and while they are quite different from the Ringo style I know and love, I still enjoyed them. Not too sure if I agree with everything he's said so far, but I don't read Ringo to be told what to think, I read him to be entertained, and that I was. I do have to add my own complaint with others about the teaser, though. It really does seem to imply an "Alternate History" or Roman soldiers type of story of some kind, which it is not. ***BUYER BEWARE***...read the sample chapters, or go to Amazon to read a full description of what the book is about. Webscriptions kind of dropped the ball on describing this one correctly.

Well written and terrifying. I would say that the book is Ringo's tribute to why you MUST (hear the capital) elect a Republican in November, and how disastrous Democrats and general and Hillary Clinton can be comes crunch time. Also, it emphasizes that we are far out of the woods with regards to WW3 against the Muslim world.
Feel free to take his propaganda with a pinch of salt.
My main complaint is the non-existent character development. Bandit six is 99% of the human content in this book.
