Centurions were the guardians of Rome. At the height of the Roman Republic there were over five thousand qualified Roman Centurions in the Legions. To be a Centurion required that, in a mostly illiterate society, one be able to read and write clearly, to be able to convey and create orders, to be capable of not only performing every skill of a Roman soldier but teach every skill of a Roman soldier.

Becoming a Centurion required intense physical ability, courage beyond the norm, years of sacrifice and a total devotion to the philosophy which was Rome. When Rome fell to barbarian invaders, there were less than five hundred qualified Centurions. Not because Rome had fewer people but because it had fewer willing to make the sacrifices. And the last Centurions left their shields in the heather and took a barbarian bride . . .

We are . . . The Last Centurions.

And this Rome SHALL NOT FALL!

I read the comments denunciating this book then read the sample chapters and reguard the book as superb.

Form the first chapter I was prepared to see a crappy story. I was completly engrossed in it's telling, laughing, feeling for the bandit and entertained by the chronicle.

I found those who did not like this book to be totally antipodal to my impressions. I have yet to find a John Ringo book that I do not like; I've purchased every one that WebSubscription have made available.

Everyone here is rating this book on their POLITICAL BELIEFS and whether or not their political FEELINGS are hurt or helped by this book! This does NOT help the reader of the ratings at all. It's just ridiculous, you can go down the readings and tell the political sway of the reader by his rating even before you read his comments. *sigh*
The "Was this comment helpful?" ratings have also become a political sub-war!
SO here's a quick primer on how to make a decent comment in a rating that will actually HELP a reader and not just make you look like a liberal or right-wing extremist looking to conquer a set of rating poles!
FIRST, we should make a fair statement of facts about this book that we believe could be agreed upon by ANY reader.
SECONDLY, we say how we liked the book including FIVE things in the statements. Those FIVE things are: How you liked the book overall. What you liked best about the book. What you liked least about the book. Tell them if you would recommend it to a friend. (Optionally it is helpful to insert why you purchased the book as well since the writer and publisher read these ratings also.)
FINALLY, for advanced posters you may also wish to compare this book to another similar book you have read before (including title and authors name of course). You could also state whether you personally would reread the book in the future.
NOW---- it is ALWAYS in bad taste to make the ratings a political rant platform, or to insult the author, the author's CHARACTERS political views, or the book, or tell the author how they should write! NEVER state your own political perspective, or your own opinion about ANYTHING except the BOOK. Sorry, THESE THINGS DON'T HELP and nobody cares about YOU. They come here to learn about the book and determine whether to buy it!
HERE IS MY EXAMPLE posting- I hope it helps someone.
IN THE LAST CENTURION, John Ringo has delivered a near-future Political Military Fiction book written from a first person narrative and with a story-line that carries you across several continents and with global implications.
I deeply enjoyed what I've come to think of as a "thinking-man's" military fiction work that kept me, the reader constantly looking in different directions and over my shoulder! I slipped easily into the various characters in the book (and that's impressive being that the book's written in first person narrative!)The soaring highs of this book for me were the first few chapters as so FEW military genre books pay ANY attention to economic force and effect and he did it well. I did find a bit of a rub in that I walked away a the end of the book wanting more. It was complete mind you, probably just a series teaser I suppose. I definitely would and already have recommended this book to a friend. I purchased this book for one reason - it had the name JOHN RINGO on the front of it.
I hope this simple review helps potential buyers as well as the publisher and writer.

When Ringo is writing combat chapters he is one the best around smart funny and knows his stuff. But I did not buy this book to read someone channeling Rush Limbaugh. You do like Hilary neither do I, enough already. Do what you do best write great combat books SF or current.

Mr. Ringo, listen to your editor. You made a comment about Atlas Shrugged -- but this book is worse. Much, much worse, since even Ayn Rand cut the speeches with a few drama scenes. The best rule is still show, not tell. This book was all tell. I was disappointed.

After trying to read the first 3 sample chapters and skimming several more I've decided this will be the first Ringo book I will not buy. With all previous books you feel like you're there with the characters. Reading this book is like being cornered by someone who just won't shut up... going on and on... this narrative style is not refreshing different... it just annoys me. Is there someone else named John Ringo who wrote this book?
