GO BIG OR GO HOME

When Monster Hunter International's top hunter, Owen Zastava Pitt, was given a tip about some hunters who had gone missing in action, he didn’t realize their rescue mission would snowball into the single biggest operation in MHI's history. Their men are being held prisoner in a horrific nightmare dimension, and the only way to reach them is through the radioactive ruins of a monster-infested war zone.

As if that wasn't bad enough, it’s also the home base of the powerful creature behind the devastating attacks on the Last Dragon and Copper Lake. It turns out ancient gods of chaos really hate trespassers. But this god picked a fight with the wrong crew, and now MHI wants payback. Calling on their allies, a massive expedition is formed, and with the odds stacked against them, a legion of hunters goes to war.

It’s D-Day at the City of Monsters.

  1. The weakest LC eARC

Tough to review an eARC because it's an unedited version. I can just say this was by far the roughest of the Correia eARCs I've purchased. Some scenes read like first drafts run through a spellchecker. There's an interesting story in here, but it needs a lot of polish. Hope it gets that attention before full release. Still a must have for MHI fans, obviously.

  2. Missing what made the other books great

This book was missing the character interactions which made the previous books so enjoyable. Some characters - like Franks - were missing completely and others were just "phoned in" - like Trip, Holly, Skippy and Julie. It's like they were IN the book but only two dimensional versions of themselves. Even then Owen spent a large chunk of the time away from all of them. The story really missed them.
I think this story could have been told in several chapters rather than a whole book. It's the "travel" portion of an epic tale and makes you keep wondering "are we there yet".
I felt sorry for one character who got a real bum deal. I rolled my eyes at the flip of a coin escape.
I'm thinking the next book will be much better - fingers crossed Franks turns up in that one because I've always liked the Pitt/Franks relationship (I think they could almost be friends eventually).
PS - it seemed fairly obvious what gender the Pitt baby would be - I admit I was hoping it would go another way.

  3. On the edge of my seat

I thoroughly enjoyed Siege. Two of the deaths broke my heart. A surprise survivor made up for it somewhat.

The book changed locations frequently in sections, but it furthered the story. There is a lot more information on the big bad than I expected and I liked how it was done.

My only real complaint was Franks wasn't in this book. I hope the next book will make up for the lack.

Overall the book was great. Some of Skippy's lines made me laugh out loud. Initially I was put off by the title; I was afraid it would bog down in details. That was not the case.

This book wasn’t terrible, but it wasn’t good either. It lacked the content to keep me engaged and invested in the story and the only reason I had to keep reading was the hope that it would end as well as the previous MHI books. It almost felt like a few short works glued together with filler material. If this had been the first MHI book I had read I don’t think I would have tried to read any of the others.

  6. still great

Okay, so here's the problem. This book was missing a little bit from the previous MHI books as some of the comments have mentioned. Having said that, we have been spoiled by Larry. It's still definitely a 5 star and its still a great read that you won't put down. Also, I think this may be a transition book. Owen is growing and developing as a character and we are seeing this here. I have really high hopes for the next book.

  7. A different direction

Good, but not the same as the previous books. This is not the hero constantly staggering from disaster to disaster, but rather the hero beggining to come to terms with what has made him a hero, and the strange powers that chose him.

Theres a lot more story packed into this one, which has squeezed out some of the non-stop action. I kind of expect the action to increse in the next one.

Definitely not on the same level as the other books in the series. This just seemed to wander around. I was looking forward to another Owen book but this didn't really feel like the first two. Really hope Larry isn't getting bored with this universe.
