The Mesan Alignment is revealed, and, for Honor Harrington and the Manticoran Star Kingdom, this means war!
Unintended Consequences
Sometimes things don’t work out exactly as planned.
The Mesan Alignment has a plan—one it’s been working on for centuries. A plan to remake the galaxy and genetically improve the human race—its way.
Until recently, things have gone pretty much as scheduled, but then the Alignment hit a minor bump in the road called the Star Empire of Manticore. So the Alignment engineered a war between the Solarian League, the biggest and most formidable interstellar power in human history. To help push things along, the Alignment launched a devastating sneak attack which destroyed the Royal Manticoran Navy’s industrial infrastructure.
And in order to undercut Manticore’s galaxy‑wide reputation as a star nation of its word, it launched Operation Janus—a false‑flag covert operation to encourage rebellions it knows will fail by promising Manticoran support. The twin purposes are to harden Solarian determination to destroy the Star Empire once and for all, and to devastate the Star Empire’s reputation with the rest of the galaxy.
But even the best laid plans can have unintended consequences, and one of those consequences in this case may just be a new dawn of freedom for oppressed star nations everywhere.

Repetitive, confusing and BADThis book goes backward in time to re-cover a number of previous side stories in either more detail or with more characters.
About 10% of the book was worthwhile and the rest was about bit players that completely failed to advance the storyline or the main characters development.
I have bought every one of the Author's previous books, including the Young adult novels, while not all of them have been outstanding (many have) they have at least been acceptable.
This attempt comes nowhere near being acceptable.
This is the first review I have ever written that is how strongly I feel that you should avoid this book at all costs. I wish I had.
Unfortunately, I will not be able to get back the time I wasted on this book.
Mr. Weber is capable of so much more, it is a pity he chose to insult us with this......

It's apparent that David Weber is fleshing out supporting characters from the Honorverse, but based on the first half of the book, I really wish he hadn't backtracked on the timeline so much.

Extremely disapointedThis book is basically a rehash of material already covered in previous books in greater detail. It rewinds the timeline to go over material that has been reused or covered in the last 3-4 books.
While the author does cut down on the direct reuse of material from other books, all he has done with this one is to expand all the details about events that are already well known.
Sadly, at this point the series is in a stagnant state, with little forward movement. I am not sure if this is due to the book being written to satisfy contractual obligations, lack of interest on the author's part, or just lack of willingness to advance one of several main story arcs.
Fans who want to know every detail of the honorverse series will likely enjoy the book, for those that want to see some movement in the current story arc's your better off just reading the last few chapters as that was all that was needed, and could have easily been put in to any of the 2-3 previous books.Posted on

JB- Quit your whining"Oh,and has no one noticed they are screwing us for $9 on the e-arc by giving us only 1/2 the book so we must pay another $18 for the November bundle to get the whole book. To use a term of my youth..."this is Bogus!""
Come on! I'm as chomping at the bit as anyone, but this complaint is even more worthless than all of our other pre-release "reviews" here.
No one is getting screwed. Everyone gets to pay according to their patience.
If you want the whole book (shortly), you buy by the e-ARC for $15.
If you can wait until October for the whole book, you buy the bundle, pay $18, and get a half dozen other books.
If you can wait 'till November, you get the hardcover or solo ebook.
If you can wait until 2017, you buy the paperback.
The sooner you want it, the more you pay. What's not to understand?
[Edited to add:
According to Baen rep on facebook page, there will be an eARC once the manuscript is available. Additionally, you can see when you search for _Shadows of Victory_ that there looks like a result/page reserved for it.]
Sorry for wasting space on what's supposed to be a review of the book, but these comments are just ridiculous!
