The Mesan Alignment is revealed, and, for Honor Harrington and the Manticoran Star Kingdom, this means war!

Unintended Consequences

Sometimes things don’t work out exactly as planned.

The Mesan Alignment has a plan—one it’s been working on for centuries. A plan to remake the galaxy and genetically improve the human race—its way.

Until recently, things have gone pretty much as scheduled, but then the Alignment hit a minor bump in the road called the Star Empire of Manticore. So the Alignment engineered a war between the Solarian League, the biggest and most formidable interstellar power in human history. To help push things along, the Alignment launched a devastating sneak attack which destroyed the Royal Manticoran Navy’s industrial infrastructure.

And in order to undercut Manticore’s galaxy‑wide reputation as a star nation of its word, it launched Operation Janus—a false‑flag covert operation to encourage rebellions it knows will fail by promising Manticoran support. The twin purposes are to harden Solarian determination to destroy the Star Empire once and for all, and to devastate the Star Empire’s reputation with the rest of the galaxy.

But even the best laid plans can have unintended consequences, and one of those consequences in this case may just be a new dawn of freedom for oppressed star nations everywhere.

Having read all the books in the series, was looking forward to this, as the last few i felt were a bit 'lame'. Unfortantly, this more of the same, either DW moves the story on instead of rehashing the same few events over and over again from different viewpoints or i will.

...that somewhere about half way I was re-reading material that not only had I read some years ago but had read from another point of view in the same book already, already! I am voracious and read everything - but it would be pleasant to enjoy what I am reading... for once. Time to pull rabbit from hat.

Another backstory kind of novel. This is getting tiresome. What a letdown for honorverse fans.

Too much of this book is dedicated to people we don't particularly like meeting up to discuss things we're not all that interested in. It's honestly a chore to read.

When I feel compelled to go off and read another book as a "break" it's clear that something is wrong.

It's possible that we're just seeing a trend common in later books of very popular authors: the editor is scared to criticise. It's not doing the author any favours.

  6. Not the best

While not as good as some of Mr. Weber's previous work, this one had more of a Tom Clancy type feel with more attention to the cloak and dagger than anything else in the first half of the book. It started weak but managed to finish strong.

  7. Boring rehash of past events

Almost no plot progression. Rehashing of much that has already happened. Not really an Honor Harrington, Manticore book, but a Michelle Henke, Talbot Quadrant book.

Biggest problem is no new plot elements. A retelling of the events that were already covered in prior books. Starts at the end of the battle of Monica (several books back) and recovers the same ground with "filler" detail on the many various revolutions developing on the Rim (verge, whatever) near Talbot.

Distracting number of side plots and numerous characters that are a retelling the events that were already covered in prior books. Little action and a lot of discussions between characters. Boring because you already know where the plot goes from there.

For those that hoped this plot would move on. It did, about 2 light micro-seconds....For the most part, this book has been done in a previous book, just changed a couple of planet names to flesh out the nonsense. If you were hoping to get any interaction with Harrington, nope, that's not in the cards either. I'm not sure if the author is just overwhelmed with the scope of the Honor Harrington universe or his commitments to other story lines (those are starting to go down hill as well) but this book was not work waiting for.

Mr Weber, I've loved reading your books for years now but it seems that most of your most recent works, or the works of others in this universe, have dragged down the quality of what you started. If you need to kill off Honor Harrington and bring this pain to an end, please do so with a final book worth the wait and the money. This effort (or lack thereof) was terrible.

  10. Disappointed

HH is one of my favourite characters, and the world built around her and Start Kingdom (now Empire) is something I enjoyed from the first chapter of On Basilisk Station. Unfortunately, the last few books have been disappointing. This book covers events covered multiple times before. I like some of the characters in the Saganami series, and the battles with the Sollies have been entertaining, but this book was just chapter upon chapter of people I didn't care about, covering the same ground we'd already covered in Shadow of Victory.

Like may others, I'm just hoping beyond hope that DW can move the HH story along, and we can move into the end game. Its been over 4.5 years since A Rising Thunder. Please...
