Zombies are real. And we made them. Are you prepared for the zombie apocalypse? The Smith family is, with the help of a few marines.

When an airborne “zombie” plague is released, bringing civilization to a grinding halt, the Smith family, Steven, Stacey, Sophia and Faith, take to the Atlantic to avoid the chaos. The plan is to find a safe haven from the anarchy of infected humanity. What they discover, instead, is a sea composed of the tears of survivors and a passion for bringing hope.

For is up to the Smiths and a small band of Marines to somehow create the refuge that survivors seek in a world of darkness and terror. Now with every continent a holocaust and every ship an abattoir, life is lived beneath a graveyard sky.

Ok, after the appalling disaster that was Tiger and the disappointment that was Legionary, this book (along with Queen of Wands) is what I expect from John Ringo.

The story was a nice take on the Zombie crisis, especially the tactic adopted to escape it, which then sets up the subsequent action nicely. As an Australian I found some of the "aussie" dialogue painful, but it was nice to see Ringo tackle something new. In that sense I really don't see the book as derivative as some of the other reviewers. I've never liked the Polsen books for instance and don't really see anything but very general similarities. It is incorrect, for instance, to say the male lead is spec-ops; he is an Australian para, which is just specialised infantry like the US airborne. In any event Ringo writes military fiction so I am hardly surprised to see military figures in lead roles.

In terms of the sudden end, I see it more as a cliff-hanger than a poor ending. The book is full of sudden jumps in time and context as it covers the crisis. You can see that as a weakness, but it actually adds to the strength of the narrative from my perspective.

Very much looking forward to the second book.

An engrossing start made me buy the ARC. Unfortunately, as others have mentioned, the book then sputtered off to an arbitrary and unsatisfying stop.

Would be a 4 or 5 * book if it had anything like an end. As it is its 2/3 or a good book. An interesting and intriguing beginning, a good solid middle, then it stops. Lots of strands requiring either closure or at least a paragraph to say they continue or not. Needs a sequel soon.

I am a fan of Ringo's for years...and this is not his best work in my opinion by far. Certain elements were derivative of earlier works, and the ending...it just ends...Many threads are left hanging. I agree with David, I would have definately rated this higher if it had a ending. At all.

So much better than "Tiger". I would say that Ringo is back in his old form. Only problem is that now we have another series that needs the next book to be written. I have to think that Faith is channeling Barb.... who's series also needs a follow up book.

The main problem is that the end of the book provides no closure at all ... not just because it's the first book in a series, but because the "end" is not at a logical breakpoint. Also, the transition between the first and second parts is ... unsatisfying ... for much the same reason - nothing resembling closure. You'd be better off not buying the book until the SECOND book is out if thi worries you ... I wish I had waited. if there was real closure and at alogical end point, it woul be a solid 4 Stars.
