—the Finest Trilogy of
Epic Fantasy in a Decade

Paksenarrion, a simple sheepfarmer's daughter, yearns for a life of adventure and glory, such as was known to heroes in songs and story. At age seventeen she runs away from home to join a mercenary company and begins her epic life . . . Book One: Paks is trained as a mercenary, blooded, and introduced to the life of a soldier . . . and to the followers of Gird, the soldier's god. Book Two: Paks leaves the Duke's company to follow the path of Gird alone—and on her lonely quests encounters the other sentient races of her world. Book Three: Paks the warrior must learn to live with Paks the human. She undertakes a holy quest for a lost elven prince that brings the gods' wrath down on her and tests her very limits.

This book (its one book to me) is on my "re-read every few years" shelf. The world and characters that Moon created are deep, detailed, and real enough that the book can be read over and over again.

When I first read this book it touched my heart. Years later it still continues to do so.

This is one of my favorite series of all time. I read it after reading Moon's collaboration with Anne McCaffrey and was hooked. Then a few years later I bought the omnibus. Now I own the digital version. I think I'm on my eighth or ninth reading. This story never gets old.

There are two levels to this book. On the surface it's a nitty-gritty action tale with plenty of extremely plausible detail.
The deeper level has to do with the growth of Paks herself from the simple sheepfarmer's daughter to the seasoned veteran and then to the righteous paladin.

Both levels start off simply and continue to become more and more complex as the story matures.

This is a very good read. The storyline while familiar is never predictable and in fact frequently is a surprise. The main characters are all very well developed and act consistently through out the novel. This is a long story that was broken up into three books as opposed to a trilogy (at least in my opinion) and it shows. Where many trilogies feel padded and meander around in subplots this is not the case here. The story moves along at a good clip and you enjoy all the twists and turns as Paks grows and evolves as a person. In some stories the main character has a flaw that is pushed to absurd limits where any rational person just wouldn't do it and it makes it harder to stay with the character but here while Paks does have these character flaws you don't feel that she is simply acting that way to add tension or drama to the story. My only real complaint is that the end of the story was the end of the story and I wanted to read more. A good story and character is a good story regardless of the genre and even if fantasy is not your favorite you are likely to enjoy this novel (a lot).

I generally DON'T like fantasy, especially sword and magic fantasy. Fantasy has to be great for me to like it at all. This was good enough for me to like it quite a lot. (I just read it because I like Moon's SF and was very pleased.)

A beautiful book that combines reality and our fantasizes to take us away. Sometimes slow but with wonderful battles and relationship struggles. Only complaint is sometimes the sacrifices made are beyond belief to me. Planning to read it for a third time soon.
