Battle Across Time!
Belasarius Apotheosis!

Steamboats that launch Greek fire; telegraph lines connecting the battlefront on the Indus to ancient Constantinople, Byzantine palace plots aided by wireless devices:  General Belasarius and his battle-hardened troops must advance quickly through the history of technology to stave off a coming age of ultimate darkness.  And now -- the epic final battle that will either give birth to or destroy Aide, Belasarius's doughty crystalline advisor and humanity's loyal friend!

The latest entry in New York Times best-seller Eric Flint and military SF master David Drake's ground-breaking "Belasarius" series.

"High spirits and ingenuityDrake and Flinthave devised an intriguing premise and developed it intelligently."

It's hard to surprise a reader who knows how the story is going to end. Flint and Drake managed to keep surprising me throughout this last chapter of the Belisarius saga. I will have to go back and read the others, again, but I think this may be the bewst of the bunch. In part because it is the end, so there are no artificial cliff hangers left. But also because the mix of action, character, and speculative discourse is really nicely balanced here.

Another point is it finally felt as if Drake and Flint were finally writing in full harmony. In some earlier volumes, their different approaches didn't mesh as seamlessly as they do here.

Bravo, for a wonderful concluding chapter. Which is not to say that there aren't plenty of jumping off points left for future volumes in the same universe.
