Earth is dead. Humanity is hiding.
Invention, progress, change. . . all are forbidden.
Now it's time to change all that.

The science fiction epic of the decade begins here.

Humanity pushed its way to the stars—and encountered the Gbaba, a ruthless alien race that nearly wiped us out.

Earth and her colonies are now smoldering ruins, and the few survivors have fled to distant, Earth-like Safehold, to try to rebuild. But the Gbaba can detect the emissions of an industrial civilization, so the human rulers of Safehold have taken extraordinary measures: with mind control and hidden high technology, they've built a religion in which every Safeholdian believes, a religion designed to keep Safehold society medieval forever.

Eight hundred years pass. In a hidden chamber on Safehold, an android from the far human past awakens. This "rebirth" was set in motion centuries before, by a faction that opposed shackling humanity with a concocted religion. Via automated recordings, "Nimue"—or, rather, the android with the memories of Lieutenant Commander Nimue Alban—is told her fate: she will emerge into Safeholdian society, suitably disguised, and begin the process of provoking the technological progress which the Church of God Awaiting has worked for centuries to prevent.

Nothing about this will be easy. To better deal with a medieval society, "Nimue" takes a new gender and a new name, "Merlin." His formidable powers and access to caches of hidden high technology will need to be carefully concealed. And he'll need to find a base of operations, a Safeholdian country that's just a little more freewheeling, a little less orthodox, a little more open to the new.

And thus Merlin comes to Charis, a mid-sized kingdom with a talent for naval warfare. He plans to make the acquaintance of King Haarahld and Crown Prince Cayleb, and maybe, just maybe, kick off a new era of invention. Which is bound to draw the attention of the Churchand, inevitably, lead to war.

It's going to be a long, long process. And it's going to be the can't-miss SF epic of the decade.

I did like the sample chapters, and have bought and enjoyed practically all the Weber books. The price is silly, though! I will wait till it comes out in the print, and even at Aussie prices, I will get it cheaper than $18 US. I can easily afford to buy now, but feel for a flimsy e version that a crash will eradicate that I am not getting good value. I do not pass on my bought versions of e books, and most of the ebooks I have, I own in paper back! I suspect some clerk has inadvertantly added a 1 in the 10's column by accident! Good book by the way! PS - have now bought the book, took 3 weeks to get to Australia and $17.13 from Amazon. I did enjoy the book, and could hardly put it down. ebook price is double stupid when I can buy the hardback cheaper! I will not buy ebook, but would have bought both otherwise! Ed

I have always enjoyed all of David weber works and have them all, alot of them in both hardback and in e-format. I will be back to get this one in e-format when the price is more in line with what a e-book should be.

David Weber has created several outstanding story lines and I have interest in this one, even noting the less than stellar comments; but where did someone come up with this pricing structure?? Let's see, new from Amazon is $17.13. Used on Amazon is less than $12.00. The eBook version here is $18.00. How do you get past the pricing and some so-so reviews to read the book itself?

I am a big fan of Mr. Weber. Truthfully ,I must admit to being really disappointed in this book. It just seemed to be a rather poor redo of the Asimov Robot series or Dahak or Belasirius etc. Definately not worth the premium price.

It would have received a great rating, but I found out how much it would have been if I had ordered the hard back version.

I buy ARC for $15.00 and have the pleasure of reading. It might be nitpicking, but it still leaves a bad impression.

I bought it electronic, I'm not buying it Hardback. I'll wait and pick up a 2nd hand paperback copy. As others say, $18 for an ebook? I did it 'cos I like Daves's stuff.

Good read, well thought out characters. Fortunately my daughter works for a book store and I can get the book at 30% off. She tells me that this one is just not selling like his other works. I think a fan rebellion over the price of the e-books is in the works. Normally I have both the e-book version and either a hard back or a paper back, i.e. two sales on the same title. This time it is only one sale. Are you listening David Webber? With this pricing you are getting less money from your fans.

I enjoyed the hardcover very much. With David's other books, I have purchased them in Hardcover, mass market paperback, and e-format. I like to purchase the paperback and e-format for portablility and comfort, but I don't think I should have to pay Hardcover price for the e-book. The save costs are not involved. I would be willing to purchase a more reasonablely priced e-format. Since I enjoyed the book, I will purchase the paperback. Offering a discount for those who have already purchased the HC, would probably convince me to purchase the e-book.

Great book, I know some people don't like the fact that its an old theme for David Webers I have to say its intresting to see how the same theme can be done in a totally different way. I loved it!
