Mission: Sabotage a Planet, Survival Not Guaranteed . . .

Kenneth Chinran was a disaffected youth who joined the military and was recruited for an elite deep cover unit, surviving training and exercises so tough that several of the recruits did not survive. At the peak of his career, he was sent by his star nation to infiltrate a fascistic, militaristic planet--Earth.

He lived in deep cover for years, marrying and having a daughter. Then the Earth forces attacked his home system, and he and his team came out of hiding, attacking and destroying the infrastructure of the crowded planet, disabling transportation and communications and creating terror in city after city.

As a result of his attacks, billions died for lack of the food, water and power which the ravaged system could no longer supply. His sabotage was successful, but the deaths of so many weighed heavily on his mind, making him wonder if he was still sane. Then the secret police discovered his identity. With his daughter, the only thing in his life that had so far kept him human, he was on the run, while the resources of a planetwide police state were tracking him down. He could see no way to escape from the planet, no way to keep hiding, and if he and his daughter were caught, death was the very least that they could expect.

But Chinran is a warrior in his soul, and even if he loses this last battle, he won't go down without a fight that his pursuers--the ones who survive--will never forget.

I loved Freehold, I loved The Hero. I was glad to find another anarchist author besides Marc Stiegler. However, this is the worst book I ever tried to read... I gave up before I got to 100 pages. If I wanted to know about morons torturing other morons I'd have watched The Saw or something equally amusing.

I just realized I have never written a review for this book, which is one of my favorite novels of all time. I bought it hardcopy (this is before I discovered this website) and before I knew who Michael Z Williamson was (not that I know him, but I love his social commentary - check out his website sometime...) This is a GREAT book. The writing is polished and flawless, the story is can't-tear-your-eyes-away-from-the-book compelling and the characters are fully fleshed out, real people. Ironically I read a review by a woman who said that the main character is a 1 dimensional posturing male chauvinist non-thinking self ego stroking non believable character... you get the idea. Her review was laughable, mostly a thinly disguised rant against men in general, and she couldn't have been more wrong. This is a thinking man's hero, resourceful and smart and extremely well trained. There is so much more to him than 'Tough as nails bad ass'. This novel is very close to being a masterpiece, and one of the things I love most about it was its length. This is a big novel, we're talking nearly on the scale of Russian classic literature, and the author is not afraid to take his time and tell the story right. Don't take that to mean the story drags - it rips along at breakneck pace. I've just finished reading Freehold (I ended up reading them in reverse order) and while I love that book too (especially exploring more of how Grainne society works) this is my favorite of the series so far (though I hope there are many more to come in this universe). Thank you Michael for writing such a fantastic book, this is one of the few novels that I will probably be re reading in years to come, with great enjoyment.

Love this entire series so far, hoping for more. I am fascinated by the socio-political structure of Freehold and what it possibly represents about the future of mankind. Also, although a little excessive, gotta love the satirical beatdown on the UN's many failings.

Absolutely the BEST libertarian/rational anarchist/individualist military novel published to date! Wimpy politicos should avoid it, but if you truly believe you are ultimately responsible for EVERY decision you make--and are prepared to defend that belief--this novel is for you! And don't miss FREEHOLD!
