The Mesan Alignment is revealed, and, for Honor Harrington and the Manticoran Star Kingdom, this means war!

Unintended Consequences

Sometimes things don’t work out exactly as planned.

The Mesan Alignment has a plan—one it’s been working on for centuries. A plan to remake the galaxy and genetically improve the human race—its way.

Until recently, things have gone pretty much as scheduled, but then the Alignment hit a minor bump in the road called the Star Empire of Manticore. So the Alignment engineered a war between the Solarian League, the biggest and most formidable interstellar power in human history. To help push things along, the Alignment launched a devastating sneak attack which destroyed the Royal Manticoran Navy’s industrial infrastructure.

And in order to undercut Manticore’s galaxy‑wide reputation as a star nation of its word, it launched Operation Janus—a false‑flag covert operation to encourage rebellions it knows will fail by promising Manticoran support. The twin purposes are to harden Solarian determination to destroy the Star Empire once and for all, and to devastate the Star Empire’s reputation with the rest of the galaxy.

But even the best laid plans can have unintended consequences, and one of those consequences in this case may just be a new dawn of freedom for oppressed star nations everywhere.

As most have already written there is nothing to see here except for Ginger Lewis, Firebrand update and some Alignment backstory. Feels more like an appendix to an actual story.

This book will need to be banned from all prison libraries, because it would violate the constitutional protections against cruel and unusual punishment to make a prisoner read it. Yes Honorverse fans, it's that bad! I own every single Honorverse book, and have read the whole Honor Harrington series at least twice. This book is a disgraceful waste of time. I can't even begin to imagine what Weber was thinking. It does nothing to really move the narrative. He could have easily incorporated about a dozen of these chapters into a proper Honor Harrington novel and achieved the same ends in terms of moving the series narrative along. Reading this book, it just seem like Weber gave up. You get the impression he doesn't know how to wrap up the series and he's playing for time while he struggles to find the plot he's clearly lost. This is now three consecutive books that have ended at the same point in time, with the Manticoran attack on Mesa. End it David, please... just end it.

I understand Mr. Weber is filling in back story in ways to show why Manticore is not taking quicker offensive action, and such, but a little more story advancement would have satisfied the buying fans better.

  4. A Weanie (not weenie) book

It seems Mr Weber has found his solution to avoid angry fans on closing a series: he'd rather make us all turn away in disgust. Sad.
Consider me weaned off the addiction.

This book should have been a continuation of the Torch series instead of HH. A rehashing of the verge back story of the last HH book, it took almost 70 chapters before it caught up to Thunder and basically the only two new space battles!
Oh,and as far as tactics against Frontier and Sollie Fleets, why hasn't anyone used the triple ripple to smack down the initial salvos... Especially with the Republican Navy being out there now.
ANYWAY I was expecting this book to start off where the last two chapters ended... VERY DISAPPOINTED

Not worth buying. Mr. Weber's writing has significantly decrease in quality. The characters are cookie-cutter copies, the narrative is scattered, and the plot is glacial.
Why does the author have to recount previous plot points like he is writing some cheap serial?

I generally love his work, but he's developing a bad habit of not moving the story line forward. I've felt this in his Safehold series, and now he's doing it here. I'll be a lot less interested in reading Honor books going forward.

  8. Boring

I am only on page 77, but I am bored to tears. More than that, I am disappointed. WTH is this? Don't even get me started on the Russian theme. Paid by the word? It looks like he gets paid by the character.

I am a huge David Weber fan and I cannot believe that they printed this with his name on it. I am worried that I may not even finish reading it. I want my $15 back.

I read the first 7 chapters of the sample and I agree with all of the previous review's . My Eyes started to glaze over after chapter 2 and by chapter 7 I could not take it any longer.I have every Version of the series in ebook and or print plus audible. I WON'T be buying this one though. I was hoping for another Michel Hinki fight with the Solie's or what or what happens when Manticore takes the fight to them in the main series. Not this mishmash of characters that I can't keep track of because you need a score card and a flow chart to follow the story line and people

I get the concept of looking at events from a different pov. However Weber has overdone it. Much of this book is either clear rehash or confusing (Polish and Czech worlds?). The story needs to move on! Space opera, admittedly with some interesting sidelines, is what made the Honorverse successful, and Weber needs to get back to some real action and to the new multi-party war among the Alliance, Alignment and Sollies.
