The Icarus Job by Timothy Zahn

A PRICELESS ALIEN ARTIFACT FOR THE TAKING

Gregory Roarke and his Kadolian partner Selene work for the Icarus Group, a top-secret government organization hunting for portals created by a long-vanished alien race, portals that can teleport a person hundreds or thousands of light-years in the blink of an eye.

Usually, those hunts are long and tedious. But Roarke has now been handed an intriguing offer. A criminal boss will hand over a hitherto unknown portal to the Icarus Group in exchange for Roarke and Selene agreeing to transport a passenger named Nikki across the Spiral. There’s only one catch. Nikki is a professional, high-priced, highly feared assassin. And she’s on the job.

A FIGHT FOR THE FUTURE OF HUMANITY

The world was brought to its knees by the zombie virus. But humanity has risen from the ashes and has begun to rebuild. Courageous men and women have kindled a fire of hope in the darkness. But mere survival is not enough. The real challenge is how to keep that future alive and to stand united.

Stories by John Birmingham, Jody Lynn Nye, Jamie Ibson, Sarah A. Hoyt, Brian Trent, Dave Freer, Griffin Barber, Lydia Sherrer, Mel Todd, Christopher L. Smith, and Mike Massa.

Interstellar Medic: The Long Run by Patrick Chiles A FIRST RESPONDER MAKES FIRST CONTACT

Melanie Mooney was just doing her job when she came upon an unusual accident in the deep woods late one night. But she soon finds herself recruited by emissaries of a galaxy-spanning civilization and is thrust into a world she thought only existed in supermarket tabloids. As the first human in the Galactic Union Medical Corps, she cares for extraterrestrials in desperate need of a medic. It will take all of Melanie’s experience, instinct, and grit to prove herself—and the rest of humanity—to be worthy of the Union. That’s a lot to put on a woman who’d just like to end the day with a cheeseburger and a cold beer.

On the Passing of Steve Miller
FPO

Photo by Gregory Rec/Portland Press Herald

We mourn the loss of science fiction powerhouse author Steve Miller, who passed away suddenly in his home in February. Best known for his Liaden Universe® series, coauthored with his beloved wife and partner Sharon Lee, Steve leaves behind a legacy that has profoundly shaped the landscape of science fiction and inspired a generation of new writers. Last year saw the publication of their 100th collaboration together, the national best-selling science fiction novel Salvage Right; Ribbon Dance, also a Liaden novel, is scheduled for release in June 2024, and Sharon intends to continue the series as per their plans.

We at Baen honor not only his remarkable literary achievements but also the warmth, kindness, and boundless imagination that defined him as both an author and a friend. "He was one of the good guys," said his publisher Toni Weisskopf. "A true light shining in the science fiction community." Our thoughts and condolences are with Sharon Lee, and the countless fans whose lives have been touched by Steve's legacy.
