TAKE BACK THE BLOODY VEIL

With a new destroyer command under him, now-Captain Daniel Leary and master spy Lady Adele Mundy are off to the backwater Veil region on a diplomatic mission.  Did we say diplomatic   Yeah, right. What they find is a local warlord ready to throw Cinnabar from the region, a vile aristocrat dealing in slave labor—and a huge Republic of Cinnabar Navy defeat that has thrown the entire sector under the crushing heel of the vile Alliance.

Time to fight back—and that Alliance stronghold in the nearby Monserrat cluster looks awfully vulnerable. Okay, actually, it looks impregnable to any but a determined Leary and Mundy. But should they achieve the impossible yet again, they do have an occupying army nearby—if only they can free it from its chains!

Master and Commander to the Stars!

So far the best in the series. Or I think it is. The last book read has a tendency to outshine stuff you read in the past. In this installment Leary moves up from the small league playing with a single small ship, to command a squandron of larger vessels. This makes for a more complex and interesting storyline, with a good deal of Cinnebar political intrigue added to the mix.

This series keeps getting better. Are we starting to see a crack in Mundy's shell? For future books David: Is it going to take a confrontation with Leary's father to give Mundy her humanity back?

Another great read from David Drake. He's been there, done that, and you can tell. Realistic heroes and internal consistency. Each of the books in this series stands alone, and each is worth waiting for. Rather than a "dehumanizing" process for Daniel and Adele, we see the humanization of Tovea. Human nature is what it is, and we fight for our families, whether they are typical or atypical. We also see a lot of the coping mechanisms necessary to those who live on the sharp edge.
