    I couldn’t finish it.
The whole premise of one of the toughest Vor lords in history was secretly bi & his wife was all in, is absurd. Especially since it had not been a thing for IDK, 10 books? Then every 10th page has a reference to his very Vor gayness, so it became too much. The plot, the dead guy was gay, his wife secret.y supported his gayness, the kid and his apparent love for her was fiction, disregard all the other books while she converts his lover to hetero.
Next thing you know, Ivan will be secretly gay.
The Fonz is wearing the leather jacket in Hawaii & jumped the shark wearing it.
Hell, I was halfway through the book & IDK what the actual plot was.
My apologies on the I’ll constructed review, but this book has me totally discombobulated. I’m going to re-read Ringo and zombies. That plot made sense.

  2. A dishonour to Aral's memory

I'm sorry to have read this. I felt it completely dishonoured Aral Vorkosigan character. As some one else had mentioned, when presented with Aral's bi-sexuality, Cordelia's response was " he's monogamous". Now it turns out he wasn't? And with his staff? A clear abuse of power and not something we would expect from the honourable Aral. Plus behind her back while she was off planet, expecting her to forgive when she returned? Does not have the feel of veracity for what he would have done based on all his previous actions. I think I will consider this series ended with Cryoburn.

Definitely a change of pace from the usual Vorkosigan tale and crossroads for Cordelia Vorkosigan and Oliver Jole. GJRQ felt like I was visiting with old friends and makes me want to go back and read the books from the beginning.

Lots of negative comments on a lot of sites. I found this book to be enjoyable. This is not the place to start the series for a new reader. But it is a good continuation for any who have actually READ the series rather than just the action scenes as it seems many commentators have. I have followed Bujold for 30 years. Along the way I have laughed, loved, and cried with her characters thru multiples reads and re-reads. Through her characters she writes a story of "LIFE" and how people live and change with it through its tribulations and joys. This and not the action is the true joy of this series. Along with a dose of believable technology and one viewpoint of the moral ethics of alternative sexuality. Many have commented that this feels like an ending to the series. I disagree. This seems more like clearing the decks to allow the younger characters to step up to the plate.

For a book that deals so intensely with the aftermath of death, it's surprisingly full of good old Vorkosigan humour. I didn't mind in the least the absence of 'action' or 'bad guys' - facing ordinary life and redefining one's family ties are not trivial challenges for a character to face. All in all it flew by, and I for one can't wait to see what comes next. The third generation, possibly?

I consider this author one of the best in sci-fi because her in depth believable characters. I have read all of her works I can find. This is not her best work and yet its based on her best character Cordelia Naismith Vorsikian. I think she wrote more to tie up loose ends than to make a full blown book.

I am a fan of this series and was looking forward to discovering the rest of Cordellia's story. Bujold was consistent with her characters and Cordella's relationship/story after her husband's death was entirely in keeping with Cordella's personality. Indeed, one of Bujold's strengths is her ability to fully develop her characters and deliver an engrossing plot. This novel, however, was all about relationship and very thin on plot. There was no adventure that Bujold usually writes so well. I found the book disappointing. But I did like the way Bujold brought Cordella's life back to her Betean Survey roots.

  9. A Nice Departure

Since the whole series started out with Cordelia finding her way and finding love, it was a pleasure to have a story where she is once again front and center, and really coming full circle. No, this isn't a "Miles" book - but neither were the first few books. I enjoyed it very much.

Fans of Miles will be very disappointed with this book. Next to no action, suspense, or mysteries to solve. Very disappointed with the book.
