A Man of Two Worlds

Doctor Benjamin Schröder's life was as close to perfect as he could ever dream it would be. That is until he has a psychotic episode that results in him having "memories" of a nightmare world that cannot be. A world in which a second world war resulted in millions dead; a world in which nuclear weapons have proliferated around the globe; a world in which the Chinese Communists succeeded; a world in which the Middle East is a festering sore of bloodshed, fanaticism, and terror. But of course none of this is real. Or so Dr. Schröder believes until a man named Raibert Kaminski knocks on his door one afternoon with an impossible and horrifying story about alternate realities, time travel, and temporal knots. Now the fate of the Universe rests on Schröder's shoulders—and billions of lives across multiple dimensions hang in the balance!

Pioneers of the Stars

There are almost certainly planets capable of supporting human life out there in the galaxy. The only problem: when we find them, they're going to be far away—really far away. Which raises the question, "How do we get there?" Barring some paradigm shift in the understanding of physics that allows for FTL travel, we're going to have to use generation starships. The construction of such massive vessels will be daunting, but even when and if we manage to do so, we'll still face massive challenges. One such challenge: Who do we send? Genetics researcher Dan Kobolt offers some answers to that question in this month's nonfiction essay.
