NEW YORK TIMES BEST‑SELLING AUTHOR. ENTRY #9 IN MERCEDES LACKEY'S CELEBRATED SERRATED EDGE URBAN FANTASY SERIES!

Teenager Staci’s father has just remarried, and now she finds herself being shunted aside by her new stepmother. Shunted all the way to the run-down and dying Maine town of Silence, in fact, and the custody of her alcoholic mother.

It gets worse. Silence seems to be stuck in the proverbial stone age. There’s no cell phone service except at the very top of a bluff outside of town, no internet except dialup, and not one familiar franchise or business. Staci’s mom seems to have gotten even worse since the last time Staci lived with her. The only bright spots in the whole place are a friendly waitress at the diner, and a bookstore where she meets a gaggle of geeks and gamers.

But all is not as it seems in Silence. There are strange things moving beneath the shabby surface, terrible plots in play, and deadly players in the game, and Staci is about to find herself caught up in the middle of it all.

This was a good romp. It wasn't as dark as some of the other entries in this series, and the whole thing is not only fully readable, but re-readable! It's still definitely geared toward the same audience the prior ones targeted (teens to twenties), and I'm out of that age-range now, so I didn't enjoy it as much as I enjoyed first reading the others, but I definitely enjoyed it as much as I enjoy re-reading the others now!
Also, I have to disagree with some of the other reviewers. First (about the end battle), this world has a LONG history of humans beating elves -- this is why the elves went underground in the first place. In spite of how arrogant they are, they are SCARED of us. It's why they go to such efforts to hide. So you're an ancient warrior clan? So what... if someone shows up with protection against your special powers, weapons that can kill or poison you with a mere touch, you're going to panic. Elves are set in their ways and CAN'T change without a long run-up. Abrupt changes to expected outcomes are met with fury, not immediate inspirations on how to turn it back around. This novel shows why the elves aren't running everything and are instead operating underground. If they were really as powerful as they try to pretend they are, humans really would just be their food instead of the hunters they conceal themselves from. Second, I enjoyed the feel of the ending. Life continues, humans continue, the fight continues. Everyone finds the place they need to be in to keep going, making the world better in their own way.

This is a pretty good read as young adult fantasy, a sort of "Twilight lite." The characters are well fleshed out, and you really care for their welfare and the challenges they face. The romance has the same feel as Bella and Edward, just substitute an elf for the vampire. I'm not sure where the comment that the book ends in the middle came from - it actually would have been a BETTER book if it had! When we reach the climax, this book moves from the realm of fantasy to the realm of just plain unbelievable. Our young heroes who spend much of their time playing D&D type games suddenly become warriors in a life and death battle, at which they excel. Not buying it, the Elves have spent centuries honing their skills in battle, and a bunch of teenagers aren't going to bring them down. So enjoy the book for what it is, the elvish version of Twilight, except the humans would be battling vampires at the end, and you can imagine how THAT would have turned out!

I enjoyed it enough to recommend it to others.

Not every book is a 5 star. This is about a 4.

It was a good read! Not sure why it wasn't rated better.

Silence is a good read, right up until the middle ... then the book ends. In every other book of the SERRAted Edge, Misty has managed to write a complete novel, but while Silence is about the same length as the other books in the series, it ends half way through the plot. I feel like I've paid a full book's price for the 1st half of the novel I was sold.
