ONE CUNNING PLAN TOO MANY. . .

It's spring in Vorbarr Sultana, and a young person's fancy lightly turns to thoughts of love . . .

. . . money . . . bio-genetics . . . love . . . lack of money . . . incompatible planetary sexual mores . . . love . . . District succession scandals . . . the Emperor's wedding . . . and, of course, love . . .

Lord Miles Vorkosigan, youngest Imperial Auditor to be appointed by the Emperor since the Time of Isolation, has a problem all his new power can't solve: unrequited love for the beautiful Vor widow Ekaterin Vorsoisson.  Ekaterin is violently allergic to marriage as a result of her first exposure.  But as Miles learned from his late career in galactic covert ops, if a frontal assault won't do, go to subterfuge.  He has a cunning plan . . .

Lord Mark Vorkosigan has a problem: his love for the sunny Kareen, daughter of Commodore Koudelka, has just become unrequited again.  But if all his new money can't solve their dilemma, perhaps a judicious blending of science and entrepreneurial scheming might.  He has a cunning plan . . .

"It's another winner with all kinds of unexpected adventures . . . Georgette Heyer has met her match for intrigue and STYLE! A sprightly conducted romance with twists and turns that could only happen in a Vorkosigan-inspired novel. . . . Boy, can she write!"
—Anne McCaffrey

"Bujold successfully mixes quirky humor with just enough action, a dab of feminist social commentary and her usual superb character development in a sprightly SF romance . . . enormously satisfying."

  2. The pinnacle of the series

As previous reviewers have noted, this is the BEST book in the series, but you need to read the whole series to truly enjoy it to the fullest. It has moments of absolute hilarity, depression, and every emotion in between as Miles launches his stealth campaign to win the heart of Ekaterin, who seems to be the only eligible marriage prospect on the planet! Of course his master plan backfires, and the side plots are rib-achingly funny. I wish that the short story "WinterFair Gifts" were included as part of this novel, so to get the whole bundle of Mile's inept attempts at romance, buy "Miles in Love" instead, which has "Komarr," "A Civil Campaign," and "WinterFair Gifts" all in one. Those are the best of part of Ms. Bujold's masterpiece, and I have no idea why she didn't win a Hugo or a Nebula for at least one of them! I envy anyone who hasn't read the series yet, especially this part. Have fun!

A Civil Campaign is an absolute masterpiece. A million different plot threads careen off each other, building into both heartwarming love scenes and some of the absolute most *screamingly* funny moments of comedy you'll ever read. It climaxes multiple times in moments of sublime absurdity or touching humanity that somehow follow inexorably from perfectly innocuous beginnings.

DO NOT read this book as your first Vorkosigan book!. This deffinately the best book in the series, and the dinner is possibly the funniest chapter in all of Science Fiction. This being said one should also know that the characters in this book have been being developed over the whole series. As a starting point one could start at "Mirror Dance" and read "Memory" then "Komar" in the order of publication to arrive at this book. All of these book have wonderful characters who are developed individually in each book which will all come together at "the dinner". Yes this book is great by itself, but reading these three previous books adds a dynamic to the events of "A Civil Campagne" that cannot be explained. There is not a bad read in this serries.

Ms Bujold is an exceptional writer who has the ability to develop a scene in just a few sentances. Her books are about the people she writes about, not the "science" of this fiction. Bujold characters are well developed, complex, and a blast to read about. If you are looking for a great series of books and you haven't read this one you are in for a treat.
