Pittsburgh: a sprawling modern Earth city stranded in the heart of a virgin forest on Elfhome. Sixty thousand humans, twenty thousand black-winged tengu, ten thousand elves, an unknown number of invading oni, four unborn siblings of an elf princess, three dragons, and a pair of nine-year olds geniuses.

For every story written, there's a thousand others not told. Lives interweave. Fates intersect. People change one another, often without realizing the impact they've made on others. They come together like a mosaic, little pieces creating a greater picture.

Project Elfhome tells the stories of those impacted by Tinker and Windwolf as they struggle to make Pittsburgh a safe haven. Some of the characters are familiar: Stormsong, Pony, Blue Sky, and Lain. Others are new to readers.

Law forages for wild plants and fish to sell to elf enclaves. A social misfit, she drives a hundred year old Dodge, has a pet porcupine, and saves damsels in distress in her spare time. A mysterious phone call sets her on a collision course with danger as she races to save a young female elf.

Jane Kryskill is the producer for the popular TV series Pittsburgh Backyard and Garden. She spends her days keeping her host, Hal Rogers, from getting himself killed as he takes on man eating plants. She's not happy when the network drops famed naturalist Nigel Reid and his cameraman in her lap to film Chased by Monsters.

Olivia is sixteen, a runaway wife of a religious cultist, illegal immigrant, and soon to be mother. As Pittsburgh plunges into war, she makes a desperate bargain with the mad elf lord, Forest Moss.

As the war between the elves and the oni builds to a head, these three women struggle with their own problems, supported by a circle of unique friends, yet entangled with each other.

tricky, tricky ! here is the underlying concept of the whole series. I am continually fascinated by Spencer's ability create strange twists in reality without boring me to tears. -- It does help to have read the first 3 books in the series (Tinker, Wolf Who Rules & Elfhome) for context. If you are new to the series, you can get a taste by reading Pittsburg Backyard and Garden in the 2013 Baen Free Stories collection -- a great read on its own.

  3. Baen should FORCE all their authors to do a book like this!

This is a brilliant book. The book mostly deals with side stories from characters not introduced in the original series. The other parts of this book is stuff the author just couldn't fit in. The best part is the author walks us through her thinking. She also includes some just for fun moments she had no intention of including, also a few What Ifs. Brilliantly Done!

  5. Great Books - terrible covers

I love the Elfhome books and Tinker - one of my favorite series. The first three books were amazing, and Wood Sprites was equally as good. One issue I have is that Wendy really needs to get a new cover designer for her books - the way they are now, she's potentially losing business they are so bad.

I thought I could just read a story or two before bed. Yeah...I read it ALL. Now I have to reread it a few more times to integrate them all. The Harbinger chapter was good, but it's so long before Harbinger is published! I liked the explanation for why characters said things differently. It's unusual to have a book where the characters are meant to remember things differently. It's more real that way, but it's different from the strict continuity most books have.

Read all her stuff. This is from the Elfhome series which starts with Tinker. Has lots of small stories of side people. Very enjoyable. I recommend this book.

I enjoy the Elfhome series. Some of these I had already read. The last quarter I won't start till tomorrow. Well wrote with novel and imaginative concepts. Characters quickly developed, if not in depth than enough to sell the willing suspension of disbelief. Have at least a hundred favorite authors and she is not just one of them but a very good one.

The stories were fun to read. Yes, some of them had been published before, but I had missed some of the previously published ones so I was happy to have them all together. You finally get to find out what was going on a the same time Tinker was running around doing her thing, like why Windwolf was at the train. There are some short stories that seem to just stop and your are left saying where is the rest! However, I enjoyed reading them and Ms. Spencer does write an explaination note for that for at least one of the stories. You get to meet some of the new players in Pittsburgh in this book, the ones who have come from the East and who have brought their baggage with them. You also get to meet the families who have lived in Pittsburgh for generations and with their friends will fight for the home they have claimed. There is also a chapter from the fifth Elfhome book Harbinger at the end of the book. I can't wait for that book to come out!!
