Duainfey
by Sharon Lee and Steve Miller
Publisher: Baen Books

Rebecca Beauvelley is a ruined woman.

In a moment of girlish folly, she allowed a high-flying young man to take her up in his phaeton, not realizing that he was drunk. When he dropped the ribbons, she recovered them, but could not avoid disaster.

The young man was killed. Rebecca survived, crippled, and with a reputation in tatters.

Against all expectation, her father has found someone who will marry her. Rebecca's life seems set, and she resigned to it. Then, Altimere of the Elder Fey enters her life—and everything changes.

I finished this book last night and I sure wish I'd read the reviews here before I started it. I won't be reading the second half of the book (aka the sequel) and I'm trying extremely hard to retain some enthusiasm for their other books. It is hard though. The book was disjointed. The character development was almost none. LeeAnn's review was spot on regarding the main character. It was a horrible book to read and I cannot recommend it even to people who like rape fantasies.

This is the first Sharon Lee and Steve Miller work that I've had trouble finishing. I bought this book and saved its reading for my only free afternoon in weeks. Well THAT's time I won't get back.

It's also NOT a very satisfying or entertaining story. Frankly, it seems like the whole book could have been condensed into the beginning chapters of a much larger, actually entertaining story.

The book's main character seems to be strictly a victim who is abused at every turn; she's assaulted, treated like property, considered damaged, used, kidnapped, gang raped, and used. I kept thinking that she'd turn around, come out strong and wipe the floor with the creeps . . . much more in line with the strong women for whom these writers are known.

I knot there's a sequel . . . but I'm not likely to buy it. I think it should be GIVEN to anyone that bought this book because this book is not a whole book . . . it's just an introduction. If it falls on top of me, I'll read it jut out of loyalty to my love of their OTHER writing . . . hoping to find some relief to my sadness at losing admiration for the authors.

This book follows a saddening trend of talented authors introducing explicit sex and sexual victimization and slavery relationships. When did

I miss the character development. Where are some admirable traits? Where are some I miss the creation of characters I for whom I can feel something other than disgust.

This makes me so sad.

The could be interesting, why couldn't it be populated with at least a few people that can be admired.

This book had lots of promise but, in the end, it disappointed. The world is wel-imagined with very interesting possibilities. The characters are pretty vivid in some cases. The tale though is too encumbered with unnecessary smut. It's such a shame. I read the arc of the sequel and I must say it didn't redeem the first book. Too bad. There could've been such wonderful tales spun within that world.

4. Kevin on 12/12/2008, said:

I thought this was a fantastic book, with great characters, plot, and especially dialogue. Any fans of Victorian type settings and fantasy should love this book. Yes, it's different from other Lee/Miller work, but hello? that's expected when the difference is that it's fantasy and not science fiction. If you don't like fantasy, especially dark fantasy, you may not like this, but don't blame your dislike of the genre on the author's or their considerable talents.

5. Donald on 8/31/2008, said:

The authors should have placed a caveat in the prologue, "This is half-a-book, those wishing to read half-a-book will have their expectations met, everybody else will please prepare for disappointment." I would not have read this if I'd known I was PURCHASING a random unfinished attempt at a novel.

The story, setting, and characters are fine. Too many of the actions are explicitly, unnecessarily UGLY. I am sorry I read this book.

Really doesn't match up will to what I have come to expect from Lee and Miller. It's not bad, and I would certainly try the sequel, but not up to their normal level of writing.
