Baen Books Announces Annual “Best of Science Fiction” Anthology
Will focus on military science fiction and science fiction adventure.

Riverdale, New York, February 2014—Science fiction and fantasy publisher Baen Books announces a new annual “Year’s Best” anthology series. The Year’s Best Military and Adventure Science Fiction will be published in trade paperback format and will focus on plot-driven military SF and space opera-style adventure. Reading for the first volume in the series, which will contain stories published in 2014, is underway.

The announcement comes as Baen prepares to celebrate its 30th anniversary later this year. “For the last three decades Baen has brought its fans the finest in science fiction and fantasy,” Baen publisher Toni Weisskopf says. “We’re excited to continue doing so with this new series of story anthologies.”

Baen Books is known to science fiction fans for carrying on the legacies of Heinlein, Piper, and Andre Norton. The Year’s Best Military and Adventure Science Fiction will feature stories that continue these long-standing traditions of SF. “There are several excellent ‘Year’s Best’ anthologies out there,” Weisskopf says. “But our anthology will focus on the types of stories that are often overlooked.”

Editing the series is newcomer David Afsharirad. A lifelong fan of science fiction—and short science fiction in particular—Mr. Afsharirad says he is thrilled to be a part of the project. “When Toni and [Baen editor] Tony Daniel approached me about coming on board, I was immediately interested. The history of science fiction is, in many ways, the history of its best short stories. It’s an honor to help add to that legacy,” says Mr. Afsharirad.

Authors who feel they have stories that should be considered for inclusion should email david@baen.com or have their publisher send review copies to Baen Books.
