A Liaden Universe® Novel

Each person shall provide his clan of origin with a child of his blood, who will be raised by the clan and belong to the clan. And this shall be Law for every person of every clan . . .

Master trader Er Thom knows the local custom of Liaden is to be matched with a proper bride, and provide his prominent clan Korval with an heir. Yet his heart is immersed in another universe, influenced by another culture, and lost to a woman not of his world. And to take a Terran wife such as scholar Anne Davis is to risk his honor and reputation. But when he discovers that their brief encounter years before has resulted in the birth of a child, even more is at stake than anyone imagined. Now, an interstellar scandal has erupted, a bitter war between two families—galaxies apart—has begun, and the only hope for Er Thom and Anne is a sacrifice neither is prepared to make . . .

"I READ UNTIL MY HANDS FROZE... One of the never-failing joys of [Local Custom] is the crisp language, the well-turned phrases, the very exciting action, not to mention the confrontation of two vastly different cultures."
Anne McCaffrey

  1. Informative
I must have missed this book when I started reading the Liaden Universe stories. Glad that I found it yesterday, and completed my reading today. That said, I would have revolted against my delm, thodelm, etc not long after becoming a halfling. I don't react well to authoritarianism and would have been thrown out of clan shortly. And I would think "Their loss, not mine".

Otherwise, a great love story with lots of twists, misunderstandings, and things that needs to be solved.

Ohh, and about this healer business. I think it is always a mistake to undo one's memory and experience. Learn to deal with, accept it, certainly, but not to suppress or forget.

OMG! What an awesome love story! It's arguably the most romantic of all the books in this series. In addition to being a really romantic story of two lovers who struggle to communicate from two very different cultural backgrounds, it also provides great insight into the Liaden cultural practices, ways of thinking, and the Code. I had heard so much about Er Thom and Daav from the later books, so it was really fun to see them "in person," so to speak. And what a treat to see two brothers who love each other so completely!

A perfectly delightful universe. Book after glorious book has fallen before my greedy hunger for yet another tale in this series. Very richly crafted down to the linguistics. I was intrigued as something of an amateur linguist by the use of the different forms of Liaden depending on the situation. One rarely encounters such an understanding of this concept in English language fiction. Any German speaker, especially one from say, Switzerland or the Black Forest would grasp this immediately since this is similar to how THEY do things. You use Hochdeutsch (High German) for business and formal occasions and your local dialect or Mundart for conversations with family and friends or just among residents of your town. The differences between the two can be vast. Latin was probably like this with the Vulgar form used for occasions that were informal and the more stratified form we now know as Classical Latin for things like official documents, legal proceedings, and sessions of the Senate.
