HONOR KEEPS HER PROMISE

The Solarian League—for hundreds of years they have borne the banner of human civilization. But the bureaucratic Mandarins who rule today's League are corrupt and looking for scapegoats. They've decided the upstart Star Kingdom of Manticore must be annihilated.

UNCOMPROMISING COURAGE

Honor Harrington has worn the Star Kingdom's uniform for half a century. Very few know war the way Honor Harrington does. So far, hers has been a voice of caution. But now the Mandarins have committed atrocities such as the galaxy has not known in a thousand years. They have finally killed too many of the people Honor Harrington loves.

UNCOMPROMISING VENGEANCE

Now Honor Harrington is coming for the Solarian League. And Hell is riding in her wake.

  1. Extremely poor in presentation, excellent in content

There are huge gaps of missing text in this edition. Approximately every other page will be missing a full paragraph or a large section of text. You can follow the story but it is most distracting. This is not David's fault. I looks like whoever formatted it set something wrong in the settings and stuff was cut off.

On the whole, this book contains several plot strings that would likely have fit better in one of the secondary storyline books, and is very heavy on the suspense building. There is a point in the book that would have made an acceptable point to cut off this installment and start the next one, while the book itself terminates rather abruptly.

That said, it contains the same dramatic action that defined Basilisk, Flag in Exile, and several others. Weber continues to bring back characters previously introduced in the secondary series, or the older installments for the fans that love them. I suspect the climax at the end of this thread will be earth shattering, but I'm not sure I agree with the plan to merge the secondary books plots into the main series, it tends to encourage a series of scenes that are much harder to track than the typical distilled plots of the honorverse.

Really, the core problem with this book is that it's trying to tie three different series of books into a single one. I can understand the desire to do so, so that you can see every facet of the pounding the Solarians will get, but this may just be too much.

David Weber has NOT lost a step. Yes, I've been wanting the continuation of this flagship series for quite a few years as well. Basically…. Weber over the years has become (for me) Tom Clancy in SPAAAaaaace. Weber ties a great many things together through out all of his books and the threads tie very very well in this book. It doesn’t end the series, but it sure does give a leg up it sorely needed. I went through the latest “Shadow of Saganami Island” book right before reading this one and it really helped to catch me up on a bunch of the story outside of the main story. That book had some reviews that frankly were pretty unfair at points. This one has some of the same. In my opinion. Some questions are left unanswered, *** Spoiler alert *** I’ll put the unanswered a bit farther down. Anyway, the battle scenes are damn well done. Mycroft is FRIGHTENING as it should be and the titanic missile salvos of old may be slowly going away. At least for the Manties.

I could have done without some of the meetings and more Honor stuff and side stories about her would have been fine, but over all this book really did satisfy in spades. The battles were excellent, gripping, done by the best in the business like usual. The end of this book did satisfy greatly as well. I want to see Mesa get hammered flatter than a fly on trip hammer as well but I can wait a bit now that some of the lust for vengance has been sated by what happens to someone else. And man was that unpleasant for them. Some of the events did lead to quite a bit of emotion as they played out.

Ok spoiler, spoiler: Nothing said about Streak Drive and how it works still, nothing about a certain extra wormhole either.

I used to love the series, but now I’d even consider white papers to be more interesting. I got excited by some of the reviews, but right now I’m about a third of the way in and have fallen asleep about six times. Even the space battles so far have me bored to tears. Not sure I can handle reading the rest…

  5. Honor is back with a vengeance!!!

After waiting in vain for years and through several books (including those co-written by Eric Flint) that didn't seem to advance the main story anywhere, the main plot FINALLY returns with a VENGEANCE! I'd almost forgotten just how gripping and heart-rending a space battle could be, but Weber returns to form and delivers the goods in this book. I originally intended to read it straight through, but at the halfway point it occurred to me that this is the last mainline Honor Harrington novel I'll be seeing for quite some time. So I slowed down and savored it. The multiple meetings where the the various groups discuss the conflict don't bother me. They're par for the course in a Weber novel, and his plots depend on them, since that's where the reader gets most of the infodumps we need to understand where the plot is going. That got a bit... excessive, shall we say, in the past couple of Honor books, but the action is back! The missiles fly, the grazers slash, the gut-wrenching fear for survival is palpable, and yes, I shed a tear now and then. If this is were the end of the main storyline, I could live with it. Obviously the Mesan Alignment has yet to receive their day of reckoning, but this book has an ending, unlike the last one, where I flipped to the next page on my computer and THERE WASN'T ONE! But this time -- well done Mr. Weber. I'm SO glad I slowed down and savored the second half of the book, and that I had the pleasure of watching the galaxy get the message that you do NOT want to get the Salamander mad at you!!! I almost feel badly for the Mesan Alignment, because when the hyper footprint of the Grand Alliance fleet appears on their screens to dole out some long awaited justice, Honor will be in the command seat...

I wrote a huge review in good reads detailing what I personally found problematic with the text, which was not the length or wordiness or drifts, but something so related to the plot that I won’t write it here, because spoilers. But what it does not change is that it is always great to read about the Salamander. The issues I had with the story busts this down to a three for me, but It was a good read otherwise. I say give it a go if you are a fan, but maybe read the other books first if you are not familiar with the series.

it seems incomplete, with too many issues left unanswered.
In fact, it looks like Mr. Weber was rushing to complete the last required book in the HH Series rather than finish the actual story (which given the way and quality of Mr. Weber usual writings may have required a few more books).
