Introducing
Flight Engineer Peter Raeder.
The man who is "Scotty" now creates
a blockbuster science fiction
adventure series!

Peter Raeder became the Commonwealth's first ace pilot in the war against the secessionist Mollies. That battle cost him his hand-and his right to fly the nimble Speeds that had been his first love. Now he's Flight Engineer on the fast carrier Invincible, a crack new ship with a picked crew, ready to fight the Mollies who control the universe's richest anti-hydrogen mines, and the loathsome spider-like alien Fibians who have come to their aid.

There are only a few problems. The pirate raiders who attack the convoy taking him to his new posting, for one. And closer to home, the traitor onboard the Invincible who engineered the grisly death of Peter's predecessor, and who'll kill the entire crew unless Peter can stop him....

Loved it. Surprisingly good. Doohan and Stirling spin a tale with believably military characters. The tactical scenes are consistent, and the tech not too high. 1st rate military space opera.

This proves the old adage of never judging a book by its cover. I recall seeing this book for sale in the shops and passed it by. While I enjoy Star Trek I have never been an avid fan and sadly I figured that this book was just an attempt to milk the trekkie fan base.

I was wrong. Possibly this is because of James Doohan or S.M Stirling or the two of them together but this book was a pleasure to read. The writing was crisp and well paced and the characters were belivable and a pleasure to follow as they developed and moved along.

The overall universe that was created didn't really break any new grounds and the basic protagnist and antagonist story lines were also along well established lines (i.e. religous nut cases willing to do anything to accomplish their goals).

But, while the story may have hewn to traditional and somewhat formulaic designs the reason that those formulas are around is that they work and in the hands of good writers they come alive.

This is heroic SF with action and passion and it is a joy to read. I highly recommend this to anyone but the most absolute died in the wool hard science fanatic. You will enjoy the time spent.

The first book in the trilogy. It took me a while to get around to reading this one, but it was definitely worth the wait. Great characters, cool ships, and scenery, and an interesting and plausible cosmology. Peter Raeder is a man with guts, and personality, a great beginning to a very good trilogy.

I love these books. I was sorry more stories with these characters were not written.
