From the Romantic Times Sapphire award winning author of the Internationally best‑selling Elfhome series.

REBUILD A LIFE, SAVE A CITY

Silas Decker had his world destroyed when he was attacked by vampires outside of New Amsterdam. He has rebuilt his life a dozen times in the last three hundred years—each time less and less successfully. Now he lives alone, buried under a hoarding habit, struggling to find some reason to wake up with the setting of the sun.

Eloise is a Virtue, pledged to hunting evil. What she doesn’t know is how to live alone in a city full of strangers who know nothing about monsters.

Seth is the sixteen‑year old Prince of Boston, ward of the Wolf King. Now he is left in a city that desperately needs his protection with enemies gathering all around.

Joshua believes he is a normal, college‑bound high school senior. His life is shattered when he wakes up in a field, covered with blood, and the prom committee scattered in pieces about him like broken dolls.

These four must now come together to unravel a plot by Wickers, witches who gain power from human sacrifices and have the power to turn any human into their puppet. Four people who lost everything struggle to save Boston by saving each other.

  2. Dense and complex, much like Red Storm Rising

Different style. Dense, complex, someone left tied up on the railroad tracks at the end of almost every chapter. This might be a good "first" Korval book: most of what I thought were loose threads are tied up in this book. But, we still don't know what the warrior ambassador introduced in the previous book will do.

I was getting scolded by my wife because I couldn't put it down. The characters are engaging and the story is different enough from other monster books to make werewolves, witches and vampires interesting again. Now I will have another series of Wen's that keeps me checking her website for news of the next book.

This was so good I didn't mind waiting for more Elfhome tales. Great book and fresh characters... I can't imagine how many worlds live in Wen Spencer's imagination.

A very fast, very fun read. Bought it as an ARC and finished it in a day, and have since reread it. This is a story that I'm definitely hoping will become a series.

  7. Wen pleases again!

Wen Spencer rarely produces anything that could be called a dud, which is why I tend to buy her latest book. After reading the preview of Wolves, how could I resist? It's a complex story with multiple characters, all of whom eventually come together for a very satisfying ending. Good guys survive, bad witches don't. Buy it.

  8. great urban fantasy

It verges on traditional horror tropes but is more a somewhat darkish comedic urban fantasy. The lead characters are involving and if quirky, seem to have a good verisimilitude of reaction and credible thought processes that are rare in modern works. The relationship between Joshua and Decker is unusual, but given the premise of werewolves having some canine personality aspects and vampiric aging cessation, not into the creepy/icky range it could have been. If any criticism is to be made-- I feel a bit sorry for the fangirl witch, a fannish alliance might have been a nice twist. But a great read anyhoos. Wen hits another out of the [this time Fenway] park.

After the previous reviews not much is left to say about another fun read from Wen Spencer. The Turkey dinner?! Smeg, now have to read the book again.

  10. Jolly fun romp

Like several of the reviews - I bought it as an eArc. I did so because the sample chapters were so engaging I couldn't wait to find what what these new friends I had met would do next. How do you make werewolves, vampires, and sorcerers seem real - you give them believe reactions, flaws, and quirks. Wen Spencer does this to the point where the feel like friends.
