A World Cloaked in Darkness

With human civilization annihilated by a biological zombie plague, a rag‑tag fleet of yachts and freighters known as Wolf Squadron scours the Atlantic, searching for survivors. Within every abandoned liner and carrier lurks a potential horde, safety can never be taken for granted, and death and turning into one of the enemy is only a moment away.

The Candle Flickers

Yet every ship and town holds the flickering hope of survivors. One and two from lifeboats, a dozen from a fishing village, a few hundred wrenched by fury and fire from a ship that once housed thousands...

Light a Flame

Now Wolf Squadron must take on another massive challenge: clear the assault carrier USS Iwo Jima of infected before the trapped Marines and sailors succumb to starvation. If Wolf Squadron can accomplish that task, an even tougher trial awaits: an apocalyptic battle to win a new dawn for humanity. The war for civilization begins as the boats of the Wolf Squadron become a beacon of hope on a Darkling Sea.

The story, in and of itself, is good - 4 stars. It could have been five, but the character overload that started in the second half of the first book is only getting worse, despite the fact that most of the world's population is either dead or zombified. While in some respects this is realistic - there really would be hundreds of people with their own stories in a real post-apocalypse - jumping the story's perspective back and forth between 'main' characters combined with introducing, building up, and then abandoning so many supporting characters is confusing. And annoying, since some of them are built up enough to be interesting before being dropped. This might be alright once future books come out if the characters are revisited, but there aren't any other books right now.
Took another star off because the science, which was one of the most interesting points of the first book - a realistic zombie outbreak was a refreshing outlook on the genre - is wearing thin and becoming less plausible. As an example, while Ringo explains why the brain damaged zombies are willing to eat live rats and drink water that is essentially sewage, he completely ignores the fact that humans aren't set up to process either, and his super-zombie virus was never purported to strengthen immune systems: his zombie hordes should be dying in job lots from cholera and other waterborne diseases, as well as simple food poisoning. Assuming they didn't die of exposure first; humans really aren't designed for a feral lifestyle. Which makes me wonder why no one has ever suggested simply waiting for most of the afflicted (who no longer have access to reliable heat) to simply freeze to death over the winter. I guess 'We waited six months and the problem largely solved itself,' doesn't lend itself to exciting action scenes. This is actually a problem inherent in any 'zombie virus' story as opposed to the genuinely undead, so it would read much better (and in fact this whole problem could be resolved) if there were some reason they can't just wait for the zombies to die.
Lastly, there's no real mention of what previously introduced survivors are doing on shore (specifically: the bank executives, presumably, and the CDC researchers) beyond communications with the Hole and some vague indicators that there are in fact survivors aside from those at sea. Since Ringo isn't telling the story from one exclusive perspective, there's no reason a page or two couldn't have been spent on them (even if it was just to say they were dead). I wasn't expecting a lot, but this goes back to interesting characters being abandoned; I can only hope they show up in the next book.
