They were six, at the start of it.

Immediately they put the plan into motion, they were five, having left one of their number in plain sight and vulnerable, fixed in the enemy’s eye…

…And to avenge the five, should they fall.

This thing that they attempted—it was impossible. Anyone in possession of the barest facts of the matter—they were six against thousands—would have said so.

It was well, then, that the facts did not describe the whole.
