"Sir, you have placed me under arrest for striking a fellow officer. I am under no obligation by military law to perform any duties," Bull told Hammer sternly.

An exclamation of incredulity and disgust burst forth from Pete Smyth. With a glance of pure disdain for Bromley, the young infantry lieutenant cried, "I'll go, sir!"

Hammer appeared surprised. "Lieutenant Bromley, I thought better of you. It is apparent to me now that the true spirit of Team Foxtrot is that of your subordinates.

"I shall not force you to go. Rather, I shall make your decision part of the testimony in your upcoming court martial and recommend the maximum penalty for your crime. And if . . . if by some strange chance you are found not guilty, I shall immediately discharge you from the Slammers." Then in a cold voice he added, "We do not tolerate cowards." Angrily, he turned to Sergeant Mungren. "Take this man back to the guardhouse and leave him there!"

Because Lieutenant Bromley stood firm on his rights, many of his comrades will die. He has disgraced himself, his unit, and the regiment of Colonel Alois Hammer. He is probably worse than dead.
