Afterword to “It’s All True” (2003)
After Corrupting Dr. Nice came out in 1997, I thought I was done with time travel. But occasionally an idea comes along for another Detlev Gruber story, usually sparked by my interest in some historical figure or other from the entertainment industry. I have a number of ideas for future stories, which may nor may not ever be written.
So five years after Dr. Nice I revisited Detlev in this story about Orson Welles and The Magnificent Ambersons. In this one I had to think about Detlev’s history and give him a personal life, which makes him less the amoral fixer he is in the earlier stories. But to keep him a cipher forever I think would make him less interesting.
