We dedicate this book to the memory of
Robert Louis Stevenson, gentleman, traveller, poet,
conservative (after a brief experiment with socialism),
and master story-teller, whose story lines, characterization
and dialogue have survived, in our view unsurpassed,
for nearly a century-and-a-half so far,
and have a long way to go. An' ye may lay to that!
