He loved his second wife and lavished all the care and attention he could upon her and, later, upon his son and grandson; but it is understandable that when the Havengore was out on an extended patrol in foreign waters, and the bridge was deserted save Pendred and the helmsmen, and his sea cabin twenty feet behind him, he thought of his crystal queen, so perfect and fair and so remote from him and his world.
Ten years after the girl left, Admiral Radlov died and Pendred moved from the cruiser's bridge to Navy House in Duncarin.
