What I particularly liked about this series is that the characters and their motivations generally seemed realistic. The protaganist works to do justice (he's not a military lawyer, just the ship's officer tasked with that role thanks to a brief course), within a basically decent (but flawed) legal system - he's not a superhero, makes mistakes, etc. but is fundamentally decent and cares about doing his duty. Too bad there's not more to read!

As a JAG and NCIS fan ( and who isn't), I fund this was an excellent blending with my other passion of Military Scifi. Highly recommend it.

Nice hard SF. Loses momentum somewhat later in the series (deus ex machina finales, recurring characters start to be too predictable and cardboard, etc...) but this one and the next in the series are real page-turners.

I read all four books in the series. All are eminently readable, although there are a few parts where you have to suspend belief a little and accept that a whole series of highly unlikely things can keep happening to the same guy.

I dithered between giving it a 4 or a 5 rating. Finally decided it could be a little better so settled on a four. Don't let that dissuade you from this series though. It is good old fashioned sci-fi with a lot of the mundane day to day activities of what it might be like to be a space navy officer put in. The mundane stuff makes it better sci-fi IMO.

A great book. Think US Navy in space. It is a relatively short book, so easy to read in one sitting. Once I started I did not stop!
