The Princes of Telfar want for nothing—except freedom.

Prince Amir lives in a lavish and beautiful cage. He shares a palace with over a hundred of his brothers, all barred from ever leaving until he, or one of his brothers, becomes the next Sultan. Living under constant threat of death at the hands of his scheming brothers, Amir has chosen a life of solitude and study. But his scholarly and alchemical pursuits bring him under suspicion when, one by one, his brothers are struck down by darkest sorcery.

Amir's monastic existence is also turned upside-down when he falls passionately in love with the beautiful Princess Eva, an exotic visitor from a far-off kingdom. Alas, the princess is destined to marry the next Sultan—and Amir has dozens of more ambitious brothers vying for the throne . . . assuming they survive the unnatural menace preying on their royal blood.

To clear his name, Amir must track down the true source of the darkness stalking the palace. But even if he can somehow save his rival brothers, must he then watch one of them wed the woman he loves Or will he die without ever setting foot outside his opulent cage

Awesome story! I really liked the author's choice of milleu. She must be very familiar with Ottoman Empire history. During the 1500's, if I'm not mistaken, the Sultans of the Ottoman Turks had their sons locked up in a cage like the one in this book and chose from among them which would rule. First thing a sultan usually did when ascending the throne was to murder his brothers so as to forestall a threat to their sovereignty. Loved it. Just loved it. Five well-deserved stars.

Fun story with a nice mystery element through it and a lead who is neither too bright nor too stupid (he's not always right, the reader may sometimes be ahead of him). Also, while this is a fantasy Arabian setting, harems and all, the women are not brainless ninnies, which is important for some readers. :)

This is one of the better books I have read in a while. I would say it is just a notch below in quality at being a Hugo/Nova nomination. Very well written deep character plot development unique fantasy twist familiar yet original. The down side I would say to the well written part is some of the action sequences unfold very fast and can be difficult to follow unless you read very slowly. (Which I did not because I wanted to know what would happen next). I am looking forward to the sequel this month.
