There are some not-so-good and even bad reviews for this book. But as one reviewer mentioned, "Any sufficiently advanced science can look like magic to someone less advanced". A reader needs to remember that the drive for the ship STILL is not completely understood - even though they use it(kinda risky, but that's space travel for ya...).
Another thing to remember is much of the crew(at least the characters in the story) are ALL consider to be somewhat of a genius-type. I know a few people like this, and they all have some odd personality quirks that cause some confusion to those who first get to know them - so to me, these character 'oddities' and 'quirks' are completely understandable.

Wow, what a way to kill off a good series. This went from scifi to sci-weird comic book garbage. Such a shame when an auther starts just phoning it in.
