The No-Holds-Barred Final Entry in the Monster Hunter Memoirs Series from New York Times best-selling authors Larry Correia and John Ringo.

"This is New Orleans." That mantra had rung in Chad Gardenier's ears since his first day working in the Big Easy. Everything was different in New Orleans. The food. The climate. The monsters. Even the shadowy and reprehensible MCB was different. But that's just the beginning.

The real reason New Orleans is so different is a larval Great Old One growing day by day in power and just about ready to pop. If Chad can't convince "the powers that be" to get involved not only New Orleans but the entire world is going to fall under the power of the nastiest of nasties.

Now on the outs with the U.S. Government and in exile from his usual job of saving the world, Chad must rally the forces of light against the coming darkness. The problem is one guy with a sword and a sub-gun isn't going to solve this one.

Fortunately, Chad's made a few friends over the years. And the Fey hate Old Ones as much as God's people, and they're not about to give up this world without a fight.

If the Saints don't come marching in on this one . . . there won't be a Final Battle. There will be a final massacre.

Now, where'd he put that number for the ditzy fey princess . . . ?

Ringo and Correia do a great job teaming up here. I really enjoyed the trilogy, and this last book was good. How about that hanger? Daughter?

  3. True to the MHI universe

I bought this book in eARC and this is only the 5th book I have ever bought in eARC. There are only two authors who have impressed me enough to spend the extra money for an unpolished rendition of the final product so much that I didn't wait for said product. They are both represented in this work. Need I say more? Probably not but I will anyway. The only bad thing I can think of to say about this last book is that it wasn't long enough. But then that's how I always feel about books that truly entertain me. The MHI universe is fantastical. Almost comic book style but without the pictures. And sometimes I think that would be a good thing because if they were illustrated the way Larry and John describes them... Just DON'T!!

I love John Ringo and when I heard that he was going to be writing a trilogy in this universe I just had to read them. This (the third book) did not "feel" the same to me as I read it, I do not know if i missed it early in the book but one of the later chapters explained the change. And of course at the end I was weeping as the close wrapped up the books and made me feel as a part of the book, well done.

This book reads like fanfaction, which is appropriate because it basically is. Really well written, and Ringo is pretty open about that fact in the first of the trilogy, but fanfic all the same. There are a lot of fan fiction tropes. Chad , the main character, is a suave genius with a katana who is just better than everyone else around him. Bit of a Gary sue. LOADS OF FUN, but the whole perfection gets a bit wearing. This character largely lacks depth. He’s even a womanizer, but it’s ok because he doesn’t want anyone to get hurt for him.

Similarly the whole focus on Japan and Japanese cheap trivia seems a little forced and weird. Especially given the books setting in NoLa. I say this as someone who lived in Tokyo for 4 years. At times it comes across as a one dimensional parody of japan.

It’s so fanfic-ish that I’m pretty sure that ringo knew what he was doing and decided to lean into it for the fun of it. If so, bravo.

Anyway, three stars because it’s a load of fun, but a bit goofy from an artistic standpoint.

You surface at 2 am realising you'd been sitting there in the cold for the last three hours, still reading, and you have only five hours sleep ahead of you because work. This is the first of this particular trilogy that I've read, and that doesn't matter, it truly is a damn good read and a right proper adventure (ie bad things happening to other people far away, and not to me!)

If your tastes in books aren't the same as mine, I hope you still find it a good read as the author really is a master of his field and the art and craft of writing. Cheers!

If you know who the authors are, why haven't you bought this already? If you don't know who they are you shouldn't start on the third book of a series. Just sayin'. BUY THIS NOW. END TRANSMISSION.

Chad is a great addition to the MHI universe. the finale to the NOLA arc and a bit of exposition on the "Christmas party" to top it all off. Great action: exploding pigs, napalm, stupid MCB agents and craven pols. Exactly what one might expect from Ringo and Correia!
