Lieutenant Sam Bitka, U.S. Naval Reserve, is getting used to civilian life when he is called back to active duty. Tensions between Earth and the alien Varoki are on the rise, and Sam is assiged as tactical officer aboard the deep space destroyer USS Puebla. Dispatched to the distant world of K'tok to protect human colonists, he wants nothing more than to serve out his active duty time and get back to his civilian life.

But when the Varoki launch a crippling surprise attack against the Earth coalition fleet, Sam finds himself suddenly in command of the USS Puebla, a job he is far from certain he can discharge successfully. What’s more, mounting evidence points to a much larger and more sinister alien plan.

Now, Sam must deal with faltering leadership in the human task force and an alien enemy who always seems one step ahead of them. Time for Sam to step up and rise to the challenge of command.

Seemed to follow WWII navel customs in a future world. Would be an excellent start to a series.

    Couldn't put it down.
    Very well written, compelling story.
Good characters and the universe is already familiar for readers of "how dark the world has become". Enjoyable protagonists, really hoping to read more from Frank Chadwick in the future. Knew him only as a game designer, he is also a good author.

A great start to a new universe. The book read well as most Baen books do and i really enjoyed the overall 'story' Some odd pages that just seemed awkward and broke the 'flow' of a quick read . Yes using real historical naval action does work well, and it was good to see the connections - an unlikely hero , yet one who believes in himself. Plently of like in these worlds. Next please. Hurry.

  5. Solid space cavalry fiction

This book has been well thought out with solid attention to physics and logistics, both factors that can get wished away in military SF. Good characterization enhances the book, though the hero is a bit too perfect and central to every success. And an admiral named Victoria Crutchley made me smile but also threw me out of the book for a moment; perhaps too heavy handed by the author. Still, read it!

The authors basing the plot on real naval actions is an excellent idea, that produced a successful end product.

An excellent story of a last stand in space.
Very interesting main character unprepared to be in command in a bloody war but rising to the needs.
    A sequel would be welcomed.
