A series milestone as we welcome the twentieth amazing entry in the nationally best-selling Liaden Universe® series.

The luck runs rough around Theo Waitley. Not only are people trying to kill her and capture the self-aware intelligent ship Bechimo to whom Theo is bonded, they’re also trying to arrest her crew members, and throw the dignity of an important passenger, the duly-constituted norbear ambassador Hevelin, into question.

No wonder Theo and her crew felt the need of a break, and retired to what Bechimo refers to as "safe space." Unfortunately, safe space may not be so safe, anymore. It seems that things are leaking through from another universe, and another time. In fact, whole spaceships are coming through. One of those ships is a blasted battleship seemingly fleeing a long-lost war. What’s more, its crew may be members of Theo’s ancient ancestral line—her relatives. It’s certain that they are in dire need of help. Theo has a choice to make. It seems that Bechimo’s “safe space” is about to become deadly perilous.

  2. revised revised review

because of a dearth of the books I most like to read, I read this book 3 times. The first time, I got bogged down in the early part of the book and surprised at abrupt end. The second time, not expecting instant adventure, I savored the details and development in the first part of the book, but was still caught by surprise by the ending. The third time, I enjoyed the entire book, being prepared for the whole cloth experience. The ending was almost reminiscent of the end of the movie Serenity, with the on-planet storm a figure for unfolding events; the author referred to the battle of the Minot Docks, again reminding me of Serenity where dock scenes were particularly colorful. I am very much looking forward to ongoing developments.

  3. Intriguing pork futures
    Quality

I think of this book as buying stock in pork futures because the authors introduce some VERY intriguing new characters and potential plot avenues. These new elements presumably will matter in the future sequels, along with the long-standing elements (Tree, Korval, etc) and the half-baked elements (Daav, Spiral Dance, etc). I am intrigued by all the possibilities, and curious about what the authors have up their sleeve (or in their cases). I'd like to see the Fascist Dept of Interior throughly routed. And wouldn't it be fun if the old tech / timonium they covet so much ultimately did them in.

However, as others have noted, very little is resolved in this book, so I am left with a fairly flat, anticlimactic feeling. Thus, I am almost reluctantly impatient for Neogenesis (expected January 2018). That book might include a visit to Surebleak, but the authors tend to hop around, so all bets are off.

Recommended reading, if a little slow due to — not clutch turtles! — but tedious attention to details at times.

Favorite scenes: Clarence and Stost and Win Ton on Minot station. Kara tending the garden hydroponics, including a young Tree. Theo seeing the past. Theo issuing a challenge.

  4. It was long in the coming

I made a mentale note of when the action started. 85% into the book and the first real sign of conflict began. After that it sped up. And ended.

It is a good book. Gives depth to Captain Theo Waitley and her crew. And it brings Bechimo out of the shadows and into the sharp light of Scouts, Liaden and Surebleak (or so I hope). Looking forward to the next installment.

Outstanding. Enjoyed returning to the Theo Arc. Think the authors did a good job giving enough information for a new reader about what had happened before in the previous books in the Arc - Fledgling, Saltation, Ghost Ship and Dragon Ship, as well as their other books in the Liaden Universe stories. Looking forward to the sequel.

  6. wanted more pages at the end

All loops lead to Surebleak, just not fast enough. I had hoped that some of the other threads would have been tugged along with Theo and Bechimo's but instead we get a glimpse of a new thread, the Yxtrang ambassador. I give four stars because I thoroughly enjoyed reading this story but I felt it just ended without even a bit of a conclusion. I only recently entered the Liaden Universe so lucky me to have so many books to binge on. Now I have to wait for the next and it seems to me there with be a lot going on and possibly many points of view.

I'm enjoying this portion of the Liaden story arc; especially the growth of Bechimo's crew. It's always interesting to speculate where the various plot threads are going, and I think I'm beginning to see more connections. Keep 'em coming, Sharon & Steve.

  8. OK But not substancial
    Quality

The story Arc is not really advanced much by this book, the story itself is interesting enough and well written as usual but does not contain any really new action. Nearly the whole book takes place in deep space! The book ends abruptly without any resolution of the story as if the authors just said we need to publish something and stopped writing in mid book.

Read to 3/4 level, interesting so far as it moves some of the sub-plots forward. Looking forward to final 1/4 of ARC.
