Book #1 in The Case Files of Justis Fearsson, a new contemporary fantasy series from fantasy all-star David B. Coe. A hardboiled, magic-using private detective hunts a serial killer in Phoenix, Arizona.

Justis Fearsson is a private investigator on the trail of a serial killer in Phoenix, Arizona. Justis is also a weremyste—a person with a wizard’s gifts and the ability to see into the paranormal world. Unfortunately, weremystes also tend to go crazy on the full moon—which is why Justis is no longer a cop. Hard to explain those absences as anything but mental breakdown. But now an old case from his police detective days has come back to haunt him, literally, as a serial killer known as the Blind Angel strikes again. His signature stroke: burning out the victims’ eyes with magic. Now the victims are piling up, including the daughter of a senator, and Justis must race to stop the Blind Angel before he, she, or it kills again. There’s only one clue he’s got to go on: the Blind Angel is using the most powerful magic Justis has ever encountered, and if he doesn’t watch his own magical step, he may end up just as dead as the other vics.

New series starting up, one that I personally find intriguing. As a geek, a bookworm, and someone who was more than a bit of an outcast as a teen and my first trip through college, I found the handling of being different as a magic user very much in line with my experience as difference. The character development was excellent and well thought out. I do not know the author; however, the quality of the work tells me he will be a master storyteller. I look forward to the follow on books and to see where the protagonists lead us in a world where disbelief suspension is not all that difficult. Please keep up the excellent work!

Contemporary fantasy has one basic hurdle it has to clear, how is magic handled by society. Jim Butcher and Larry Correia sufficiently integrate magic into the politics, history etc. of the general world. Butcher by making magic largely un-integratible and Correia by just positing an alternate history. This book just flails around with it. Apparently magic use is known and believed but maybe it isn't based on the characters reactions. There is no rigor and most of the obstacles interpersonal or otherwise are solved via deus ex machina. It is not a terrible book but the magic system, grounding and characters are just very arbitrary and inconsistent. It is the kind of book you'd be satisfied getting for a few bucks from the slew of self published titles on Amazon. For a baen offering it is seriously weak tea.

Great start for a new series. Classic setting but very well executed, only thing missing to make it 100 % classic would be some kind of sassy animal. But good read, made for a fun afternoon.

Well executed, with likable and understandable characters. If I were to try to describe the style, I'd say something like Jim Butcher with a touch of Larry Correia. I'll be coming back for more; I hope David B. Coe becomes a Baen regular.
