The first human mission to Mars meets with near‑disaster when a meteoroid strikes the spacecraft, almost destroying it. The ship is too far from Earth to simply turn around and return home. The eight‑person crew must ride their crippled ship to Mars while they desperately struggle to survive.
On Earth, powerful political forces that oppose human spaceflight try to use the accident as proof that sending humans into space is too dangerous to continue. The whole human space flight program hangs in the balance. And if the astronauts can’t nurse their ship to Mars and back, the voyagers will become either the first Martian colonists—or the first humans to perish on another planet.

Product ReviewIt wasn't that great of a read, and more annoying, it wasn't a sequel to Mars, Inc. as the banner on the Baen main site said. I bought the eARC expecting the first story to be continued, but other than starting the story at roughly the point Mars, Inc. ended, the plot differed significantly.
The characters all had different names, the original commercial nature of the mission changed to a government mission, and the background was completely different. The tone of the story was so different that it continually jarred me out of the story.
Seriously, other than having Ben Bova's name on the cover, the two books are not related to one another AT ALL. It is readily apparent that the second author didn't bother reading one word the first book. This is not a sequel and Baen saying it is in their banner add is more than a bit of bait and switch. They should correct the banner ad as soon as possible.
I'm very disappointed.Posted on

Product ReviewUnfortunately this wasn't a great read.
There was very little character development and it was very hard to empathize with any of the characters.
In addition the whole book felt "choppy" small chapters that really didn't lead from one to the next well led to the feeling that it was written by a committee.
Finally, it gave off a vibe that the authors were trying to just throw obstacles at the characters without rhyme or reason. There was no consistency and no feel of an overriding story arc.
On the whole, I don't regret buying it, but I was disappointment in it.Posted on
