In 1781, George Washington's attempt to trap the British under Cornwallis at Yorktown ends catastrophically when the French fleet is destroyed in the Battle of the Capes. The revolution collapses, and the British begin a bloody reign of terror. A group of rebels flees westward and sets up a colony near what is now Chicago. They call it Liberty. The British, looking to finish what they started, send a very large force under Burgoyne to destroy them. Burgoyne is desperate for redemption and the Americans are equally desperate to survive.

Had the Battle of the Capes gone differently, a changed, darker, New World would have been forced into existence. But even under those dire circumstances, Liberty may still find a way!

Too much like his other books. Sorry I spent the money. Agree with another reviewer that his last few books are lacking in any new ideas. It's as if he has a template puts in new dates and names sends it off to printer. Don't think I will add anymore of his books.

The book by itself is ok, not good just ok. But I agree with the other review that his last few books have had virtually identical plots. Change a few names, put it in a new setting and he's done. I own six of his other books and I regret purchasing this, especially at eARC prices. Disappointingly unless something changes in his writing I won't be buying any more of his new work.

Has anyone noticed that Conroy's alt-history books are becoming excessively formulaic? 1784 isn't *bad*, mind, it's just 'pick a random historical period or event relevant only to the US and add formula, rinse and repeat' ... and, in this case, there's a number of things that are, at the very least, historically dubious and more likely downright incorrect (sloppy research?) and other things that strain credulity (such as making the Ferguson Repeating Rifle in 'Liberty' ... yes, some proforma nods as to justification are given, but, seriously, they simply don't add up). Not bad, just ... not very good.

Its as good as his other Alt-History books. I was a little disappointed in that it had a great build up to a rather Abrupt End!
