Book One in an exciting new series, the Shadow Warrior saga.

In the fog‑enshrouded peaks of the island nation of Nehan, Ran, a newly‑minted shadow warrior is set loose on a musha shugyo, a wandering quest, whereby he must travel alone and hone his skills. Journeying aboard a merchant vessel, Ran hears tales of a mysterious lord believed to have the dead for his servants.

Soon these tales prove all too real as Ran comes to the aid of Jysal, a beautiful sorceress, whose undeveloped power gives her the ability to heal a land ‑‑ or destroy it.  But the Lord Kan‑Gul also covets Jysal's power. And when Kan‑Gul sends a army of the undead to take Jysal by force, Ran is faced with the ultimate warrior's choice: save himself, or face down a horde of enemies that cannot be killed for the simple reason that they are already dead!

While I was intrigued enough to purchase the ARC, I feel somewhat disappointed with the book overall. Underdeveloped characters, largely cast in rote unimaginative stereotypes, not to mention back story that withers on the branch. Ran, the main character, showed some promise, but when his internal monologue kept repeating the same descriptions I got a bit bored. Admittedly the author did recover a little by displaying a good understanding of applied lateral logic, as it relates to human behavior, but then it wandered in to the ridiculous again when the characters were running on empty for far too long and still embroiled in very strenuous activities at regular intervals. The ending, whilst no real surprise, unfortunately continued the one eyed casting of characters and their behaviors. With ultimately very predictable results. Having said all that, I did read to the end and if you are in for a quick fix with a bit of jazz, this book would satisfy.

Kept my interest but too many cliff hangers - could have been about a quarter to a half shorter.
Reminded me of an old Chinese kung fu movie - which is good (and bad).

After reading the sample chapters, I was extremely disappointed in the writing quality. This book has more in common with a video game fan fiction than a cohesive novel.
