Product ReviewThis is a "cannot put it down" book for me. As in, up waay too late for too many nights.
... And, three read throughs.
How would I describe the plot, without spoilers? You've got children that behave like children; teenagers that behave like teenagers; and corporate types that behave accordingly. All started with scientists behaving like scientists.
The cosmology setup may seem odd. It probably violates relativity, as it makes the relative matter density actually change how the universe behaves -- near the center of the galaxy (dense) does not behave the same as at the outer tips of the spiral arms or above/below the galactic plane.
Don't be surprised if you don't understand the prologue until about 1/3rd of the way through the book. That's about when the "explanation for someone that didn't grow up in the society" happens. And that's another interesting item about the writing style -- everything is written from the viewpoint of people that understand the social/physical world -- and there are two very different worlds with two different views.
In other words, Vinge doesn't explain anything to you, the reader -- you're expected to pick up what the various characters understand as they understand it. And it works.Posted on

Product ReviewVinge's best work, and that's saying a lot. Some of the most richly-realized aliens ever written, some novel twists on cosmology, and a gripping storyline to show it all off.

Product ReviewI read a Deepness in the Sky before this, and I bought this simply based on the author's name. Went into reading this with very high expectations, and all were met/surpassed. It was an absolutely amazing work of fiction.
Again, its disappointing that this is not available in electronic format.Posted on

Product ReviewFabulous, simply put. Of course you need to keep your head straight with all the parallel story lines that actually goes on, but that is just the spice that makes this book such a tremendously fun ride.
