At last the generals were going to get their kind of President. At least that's what they thought . . .

The stock market crash of 1994 made 1929 look like a minor market adjustment . . . the rioters of the '90s made the Wobblies look like country-club Republicans . . . the Vice President of the U.S. resigns in a cloud of scandal—and when the military hints that they may let the lynch mobs through anyway, the President resigns as well.

But the President must first propose a new chief executive to succeed him—one approved by the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Thus the generals get to pick a President. Imagine their surprise when the President they pick turns out to be his own man . . .

I loved this book when I first read it (far too many years ago), and I'm very glad that Baen's released it again for new readers to enjoy.

This is one of those books that sticks with you, that you always go back to read. After I lost my original copy I had to search online to find one at a bookstore and paid over $40.00 for it so this is a much better deal lol.
Basically the story is of where the US is now or coming to, public services collapsing, unemployment running rampant, everything just coming apart, but since is set in the eighties russia still communist and eastern bloc around in a way, after the sitting president collapses the secession is thrown in the air since no one else wants the job and the senate and the congress are terrrified the country is collapsing and wish to pass the buck to anyone that can save their asses and perks. The head of the joint chiefs realizes that he will probably have to take over but in a washington moment tries to find a way to preserve the democracy. He finds a man that is willing to be president, has him sworn in as vice president by old president who than quits to go to hospital leaving an unelected vice president to become president. As martial law is already in effect he basically rules by presidential edict and sets about bringing the country out of the mess it is in. A true Cinncinatis moment! Along the way he meets many foes as not all were unhappy the way the country was going and like always many simply wish to be contrary and do things their way, right or wrong. Is a book of a world that never was but still might be in many ways. I think if you ask Jim Baens friends you will find this is a book that summarized much of what he thought of and believed in, fits in well with much of what he published.
At the end of the day a great read and leaves you with hope for the future.
