After the U.S. is conquered, an enclave of brilliant misfits leads a rebellion against near-impossible odds. The totalitarian East has triumphed in a massive invasion and the United States has fallen to a dictatorial superpower bent on total domination. That power is consolidating its grip via concentration camps, police state tactics, and a total monopoly upon the very thoughts of the conquered populace. A tiny enclave of scientists and soldiers survives, unbeknownst to America's new rulers. It's six against six million—but those six happen to include a scientific genius, a master of subterfuge and disguise who learned his trade as a lawyer-turned-hobo, and a tough-minded commander who knows how to get the best out of his rag-tag assortment of American discontents, wily operators, and geniuses. It's going to take technological savvy and a propaganda campaign that would leave Madison Avenue aghast, but the U.S. will rise again. The counterinsurgency for freedom is on, and defeat is not an option.

This book is even more racist than Farnham's Freehold. I bewildered by the positive reviews which seem to confuse national policies becoming a threat with a race itself being evil. The work essentially glorifies genocide. The only mitigating factor is that Heinlein was apparently persuasively urged by the U.S. government to write this as WWII propaganda. It is sadly reflective of the nasty nature of such writing designed to demonize the Japanese.

I would only recommend it as an example of dishonorable rabble rousing during war.

I first read this book many years ago and found it to be wonderful. It is a short and quick read. That still does not take away from the amazing story. I swear Heinlein had a crystal ball when he wrote this story so long ago.

Heinlein predicted back in the 60's that the Chinese were the real threat to America. Here we are over a half century later and just now starting to figure it out.

A MUST READ for everyone who wants a free America.

I have to agree with the rating, but as far as the title change "Sixth Column" IS the original title as published. You have to wonder why the 60's editions were renamed, but I think that the once and now title better fits the book.

Sorry, this may be a stupid question, what was wrong with the title "The Day After Tomorrow" which it had the first time I read this book? The rating is based on my reading the original paperback umptyodd years ago when people believed the Sun orbited the Earth.
