Stephanie Harrington absolutely hates being confined inside her family's compound on the pioneer planet of Sphinx, a frontier wilderness world populated by dangerous native animals that could easily tear a human to bits and pieces. Yet Stephanie is a young woman determined to make discoveries—and the biggest discovery of all awaits her: an intelligent alien species.
Treecats are creatures that resemble a cross between a bobcat and a lemur (but with six legs and much more deadly claws). Not only are they fully sentient, they are also telepathic, and able to bond with certain gifted humans such as the genetically-enhanced Stephanie. But Stephanie's find, and her first-of-its-kind bond with a treecat, brings on a new torrent of danger. An assortment of highly placed enemies with galactic-sized wealth at stake is determined to make sure that the planet of Sphinx remains entirely in human hands—even if this means the extermination of another thinking species.
The first entry in a new teen series and the origin saga for the incredibly popular, multiple New York Times and USA Today bestselling Honor Harrington adult science fiction adventures. Young Stephanie Harrington is none other than the founder of a pioneering family dynasty that is destined to lead the fight for humanity's freedom in a dangerous galaxy.

Product ReviewI've read quite a few Weber books but not many recently because the Honor books have not had the action and characterization the first ones did. I have read all the short stories relevant to this novel and there is additional material. It is good fiction with a believable teen character and believable parents and other role models also. I think it makes a good intro for YA and adult readers to the Honorverse. Hopefully subsequent books will be out quickly so YAs don't get too frustrated about it being a series. The treecat viewpoint sections are particularly well done, so I hope we see more of those.
I got my copy at a Baen roadshow, but would have bought an eARC because I really like the stories with treecats. Since the cover is so different from the final, I will probably buy a regular copy when it appears.Posted on

Product ReviewIt's a good read, but don't waste the $15 on an ARC. It's two short stories that have already been published. It's been awhile since I've read them, but if anything is changed, it's only to make them work together as a novel.
That said, I'm always willing to throw more money at DW if it goads him to write faster.
I'm not sure how well it will work as a YA novel, much of the appeal hinges upon being familiar with the Honor Harrington series I would think.Posted on

Product ReviewAs others have noted, much of the story has been told in other places. Still, it was well done and I believe had enough information to make this a story enjoyable by those who haven't already read the series. It was too short - but then I am often disappointed to see a Weber book end. I really enjoyed reading a HH Universe book without the extended political intrigue that the later HH books have. Yes, I understand that Admirals can't spend all their time just blowing stuff up like captains. This book goes back to a more straightforward character development and action like the earlier HH books had.

Product ReviewI concur with the rest. This was not worth the cost of an ARC that I paid. Would have bought and paid for 5-6$ and enjoyed. Way to simple and short for an ARC with over a 1/3rd of the book simply a reprint of the short story. Very disapointed. in the work for the cost I paid.
