Admittedly, the two "Crystal" books are not great as stand-alones, but if you're hooked on the Liaden Series, you really want to read these two background books, which answer a lot of questions the later books bring up. I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know Cantra and Jela and putting their firsthand experiences with the diary entries from the later books. It also gave me a lot more insight as to why Jela was so determined to save the tree. There was a lot more to it than just being grateful to it for saving his life.

Product ReviewGreat but only if you are a Liaden fan. Although it tries hard to be a stand-alone, many nuances are lost if you aren't familiar with the rest of the stories.
