What if there really are aliens and they do attack? Read what two scientists reveal in this "how-to" survival manual for the space age. Some events (such as a deliberate asteroid strike) produce such a massive setback to life, the Earth and humanity that we must understand and prepare for them, even if the chances are low that they'll come about. But where to begin? Drs. Travis S. Taylor and Bob Boan are experienced scientists, physicists with expertise in both defense and military signal intelligence and experience working with the Department of Defense and NASA.

These two intellectual heavyweights take us on an amazing journey through what we do—and do not—know about how to defend ourselves from space. Sure, that day may never come in our lifetimes—but everyone should have a copy of this lying around just in case. . . .

This book MADE me think! How would we fight off a culture that could span interstellar space? Taylor lays it out in black (very black) and white. He gives me hope that maybe we could find a way to survive. I really enjoyed it from the first page to the last.

Hard to rate this. It starts out solid and interesting, but veers into jingoism and then full-fledged loony wishful thinking. Much like the several other books (fact and fiction) that I've read by this author.

This books presents a thoroughly plausible scientific argument for the possibility of alien invasion and the necessity of planning for such an event. The authors call upon astrophysics, biology, the military sciences (including up-to-date modern military theory) and history to present a number of scenario's.

This book is NOT fluffy science fiction. It is heavily grounded in scientific and military theory. It does not present a fictional narrative, but takes the form of a manifesto or defence planning proposal. Although well written, it is not light reading. Readers looking for a fictional narrative in which the earth actually defends itself from invasion will be disappointed. Readers looking to understand exactly how such an invasion might unfold - and how humanity could potentially respond with some expectation of success- will be enthused as much as I was. A must-read for any aspiring military science-fiction author.

This book would be more correctly described as a military or security paper rather than as a work of narrative fiction. It is quite deserving of a place in the libraries of institutions such as Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, West Point and Offizierschule des Heeres.

If you're looking for fluffy science fiction, this is not the book you're looking for. This book is not really in the science fiction genre. It's more like something you'd read in Scientific American. I found it to be one of the most fascinating books I've read in a long time. What I like about it is that every assertion is backed up with scientific evidence presented in a very readable and interesting way. I went into reading being very skeptical but the more I read, the more interested I got. Read the free intro chapter and you'll see why.

This book is not advertised as non-fiction, but it looks like a textbook to me. I strongly dislike textbooks. I missed the description as it was part of a webscription.
