On the colony planet of Terra Nova, Carrera has achieved his revenge, destroying those who had destroyed his life by killing his wife and children in a terrorist strike. And, with this help of his second wife, he has thwarted an attempted coup that would have restored the rule of the oligarchy and undone his hard-won victory. But his fight is not over yet...

The problem of the Tauran Union's control of the Transitway between Terra Nova and Earth remains, as does the problem of the nuclear armed United Earth Peace Fleet, orbiting above the planet. The Taurans will not leave, and the Balboans—a proud people, with much recent success in war—will not tolerate that they should remain.

And yet, with one hundred times the population and three or four hundred times the wealth, the Tauran Union outclasses little Balboa in almost every way, even without the support of Old Earth. Sadly, they have that support. Everything, everyone, will have to be used to finish the job of freeing the country and, if possible, the planet. The children must fight. The old must serve, too. And the women?

This is their story, the story of Balboa's Tercio Amazona, the Amazon Regiment.

I have enjoyed this entire series so far. The main criticisms seem to be a dislike for the chapters about training and a lack of "advancing the story arc". The time spent describing training is integral to the story and as a Vet they bring back fond memories for me. As for the book not "advancing the story arc" sometimes you have to go back before you can go forward. Becoming invested in the characters of this book will increase the pleasure of future books. I personally can't wait for the the next one!

Kratman's 'Terra Nova" series continues to deliver sometimes brutal action and to purposely irritate SF reviewers. This volume should perhaps have been a short story in between The Lotus Eaters and the next novel in the series, but it is well written and I am personally looking forward to reading the next book. That being said, it does not advance the overall story all that much. It hints at a major advancement in the story arc, but that is all. Keep it up, Kratman.

I have not read the previous books in the series, although I have read several books by Kratman.

I thought it was rather selfconsiously modeled on and an update of "Starship Troopers". Kratman tells a story about as well as Heinlein did in the 1930s and his immagination within his sphere (the PBI or "poor bloody infantry" [quote from Heinlein, who was I think quoting Kipling]) is decent. Heinlein's view was simplistic- military are lousy at governing civilians if economic efficeincy is part of the yardstick. This is an attempt to update the model for feminism.

But if you don't like reading Weber's exposition of how society got behind the fleets that finally crash into each other you aren't likely to like this.

Like others i found myself a little disappointed at the lack of progress in the general story arc of this series.
Having said that: For me this was by far the most readable book in the series. I barely skipped any of the training sequences, unlike Desert and Carnifex where i frequently had to skip ahead to the action.
